MURPHY, Florence Frances Mary Simmons passed away peacefully in her ninety-eighth year, at Norview Lodge, Simcoe, on May 29, 2008. Flo, as she was affectionately known, was predeceased by her parents Richard and Ruth Brown Simmons; her brothers Charles, George, Jim, and Chester; her sister Elizabeth Ford; her husband Leslie Sr., (1953), and her son Leslie Jr. (2000). Flo is survived by her daughter-in-law Rosemary and grandchildren Kevin, Michael, and Patrick; her son Jim (Katie) and grandson Jamie (Aileen Finlay); her daughter Mary Ellen Du Pon, former son-in-law Brian Du Pon, and grandchildren Melanie Harrell (Ty), Colleen (Carl), Ashley (Aaron), and Hailea Squires (Jim); and her son John (Joan) and grandchildren Iain, Marjorie, Topher, and Mary; as well as by nine great-grandchildren. Born in Hastings, Sussex, England, on March 8, 1911, Flo came to Canada at the age of two with her parents, part of a group of five families brought to this country by the Canadian government to help establish the fishing industry here. In 1934, Flo married Leslie Murphy, Sr., and they continued the tradition of commercial fishing until his premature death from cancer in 1953. Raising her family of four children as a single parent, Flo worked at the Fishermen’s Co-Op, the Arbor, and, for many years, at the Port Dover Maple Leaf. She also was a charter member of the Eastern Star and of St. Paul’s Club, in which she enjoyed being one of a group of quilters for many years. Flo is lovingly remembered by her family as a wonderful mother and as the consummate grandmother. Capable and strong, the port in her family’s storms, she was kind, considerate, and generous of spirit to all, fun to be with, and graced with a great sense of humour. Baker of the best pies in the world, she made sure that every person had his or her favourite, even after she became legally blind. Undaunted to the end, Flo finally said that she wanted to go Home, and so she did. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Orchard Grove, Norview Lodge, who with their loving care made her final years comfortable. Visitation for Flo will be at the Thompson Waters Funeral Home on Thursday evening, June 5th from 7 to 9 p.m. Her funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Dover, on Friday, June 6th at 11 a.m. For anyone wishing to make a memorial donation, Flo’s family would appreciate that consideration be given to St. Paul’s Anglican Church, because of the importance of the church to her in her lifetime.
