    • Obituary - KNOWLES, David George at his residence in Avalon Park on Thursday, July 3, 2008 in his 71st year. Beloved husband, childhood sweetheart and soul mate of Dona, married for more than 54 years. Devoted father and grandfather of David Jr., Kerry Menzer and Tom Honey, and daughters, April, Laurel, and Jaimie, Jeanne Pritchard and her husband Robert and daughter, Jessica, Sam Tracy and her husband John and daughters, Victoria and Olivia, two great-grandsons, Ricky and Noah and special grandchildren, Holly and Dylan Bush. Dearly loved brother of Jeanne Nyberg and her husband Ted, and loving uncle of Toby and Mark Hunter. Predeceased by his parents Thomas Knowles and Hazel Knowles-Marsh (nee Ward) and his son Tommy Basil (1963). Dave was a Member of the Erie Lodge #149 A.F. & A.M., a lifetime member of the Mocha Shrine, London and Zem Zem Shrine, Erie PA. Dave was a life long resident of Port Dover, he was the owner/operator of D.G. Knowles Marine and a tug boat Captain. During his career as Captain he was hailed a hero when he put his own safety at risk to save the lives of two Canadian ship pilots from the Detroit River after they had been hit by another vessel. Dave was a true friend to many, always being there when needed. One of his favourite pastimes was attending the “sitting” at the Mummery Twine shanty for morning coffee. He was a devoted family man, his wife, children and grandchildren were his greatest joy. Dave was an animal lover and enjoyed watching the wildlife at his home in Avalon Park with his best buddy Beaufort. He will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends. Friends were invited to meet with the family on Sunday, July 6, 2008 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Thompson Waters Funeral Home, 102 First Ave., Port Dover (519 583-1530). Masonic Service at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Service to celebrate Dave’s life was held Monday, July 7, 2008 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church (St. George Street and Market St.). Father Kendall Reimer officiated. Cremation followed. For those wishing donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Lung Association would be greatly appreciated by the family.
