Obituary - LONG, Maurice (Moe) William. Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at his Brantford home in his 79th year. He was surrounded by his best friend and wife, Theresa, and his three loving and devoted daughters Michele Moore of British Columbia, Tracy Johnson (Phil), and Lisa Kyle (Darrin). He will be greatly missed by his brothers Walter Long (Barbara – deceased), Merritt Long (Arlene), and his sister Joyce Vokes (Vic). He was a wonderful grandfather to Kate, Alexandra, Sydney, Bernadette, and Adam. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, and a large group of good friends. He was born and raised in Port Dover, the youngest son of the late Clifford and Constance Long. He attended Port Dover Public School and Simcoe High School. Maurice was an Insurance Adjuster throughout his employment. Moe loved jazz. He began playing trumpet in dance bands around Norfolk County at the age of 14. He was a member of orchestras such as One Night Stand and The Blue Note Sextet that played throughout the area including the popular Summer Garden. Mr. Long was also a longtime member of the Port Dover Band under bandleader Ed Steele. His musical talent led him to play in The Lions’ Minstrel Shows in Simcoe and he was also involved in little theatre musical productions. Moe enjoyed being a member of the Kinsmen Club, and was also a member of the Dundson Legion. In addition, he was a honourary member of the Port Dover Legion where he was proud to play Last Post and Reveille every Remembrance Day for over 50 years. Through the years, Moe pursued a passion for photography, clock making, and riding his motorcycle. He had a great sense of humour and loved hearing and telling a good joke. His many friends will be forever grateful for the love of music he passed on to them. As per Moe’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a celebration of his life will be announced at a later date. Cremation has been entrusted to Tranquility Cremation Services. Rest in peace. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice. Support jazz!
