| 4001 | Reflections Reflections on the life of our Dad, our Grandpa and our Great Grandpa, John Chapman, born and named Jan Tjepkema, on October 21, 1912 in Hamilton, Ontario to his parents Jan and Johanna Tjepkema. He had an older sister, Greta and two younger brothers, Ed and Bill. His parents were both born in Holland and immigrated to Canada, where his father was a machinist and worked for Chipman Hotton, Canada Cotton and Sawyer Massey. At the young age of 46, when Dad was only 6, his father died of rheumatic fever, leaving his mother with four young children. She returned to Holland with her children, where she left the youngest son, Bill, age 2, with her parents, where he remained until he was 14. She returned to Hamilton with her three older children and worked at "The Boys' Home" on Stinson St., so she could keep her children together. Life was not easy in The Boys' Home, with sometimes as many as 200 boys. There was very strict and sometimes cruel discipline and assigned tasks to do daily. Not perfect and often mischievous, Dad was still chosen to do many errands outside the home, especially delivering messages on foot and was often also chosen for outside outings. On one occasion, he was to deliver a message to Nora Frances Henderson, a member of the City Council, to her home and had to wait for a reply. She was kind and loving and gave him a piece of pumpkin pie, which contained caraway seeds. Dad thought mice had left their droppings so he stuck the pie in his pocket to be rid of it. On Mrs. Henderson's return, she thought he had eaten the pie so fast, he must be very hungry and brought him another piece which he had to eat. The Henderson General Hospital, where Dad passed away, June 10 was named after the same Nora Frances Henderson. During this time in The Boys' Home, the Head Mistress, a very strict and stern Jamaican-born lady, decided Tjepkema was too hard to pronounce and to spell so she arranged to have their name changed to Chapman and Jan to John, thus Dad became John Chapman, but his official birth certificate is still Jan Tjepkema. At the age of 13, Dad was sent to be a helper on the farm of Lloyd and Lizzie Swartz, at R.R.#2, Nanticoke, Ont. Lloyd had a much younger sister, named Maggie, who lived with her parents just up the road, but an introduction of John and Maggie was made. Dad returned to Hamilton after the farm stint and worked at Stelco. During his teenage years, around 17, he was working at home with some steel and a fragment of steel entered his eye and he was blinded in that eye for the rest of his life. Working at Stelco was not for Dad, so he returned to the Nanticoke area and married Maggie Swarts in 1934 and they lived with Maggie's parents. The family soon grew to four, with the birth of daughters, Doris and then Fay and remained in that vicinity, living with Grandpa and Grandma Swarts and eventually moving on their own to rented accomodations. During this time the Second World War was raging, and brothers Ed and Bill enlisted in the Armed Forces. Dad wanted to, but could not pass the medical due to only one sighted eye. So when Jarvis Airport was proposed Dad became a carpenter there, building hangars, mess halls, barracks and stayed on as a Tractor Operator for the duration of the Jarvis Airport, until it was dismantled in 1945 and he helped drive all the military vehicles to Kapuskasing, Ontario. Though not in uniform, he served his country well. Doris was now ready for High School, so for the best interests of his children's education, Dad went to Simcoe and secured a job at Norfolk Co-Op Lumber Yard and moved our family to Simcoe in 1946. From Norolk Co-Op he went to work in the British Knit Plant, but Dad loved working with wood and building, so he left and worked for several small construction companies namely, Ralph Bint; Elliot Construction and Bob Spencer. He finally realized it would be easier to be your own boss and build the way you thought it should be done, so he went on his own, self-employed, and built many beautiful homes with specialty built-in hand-crafted kitchen cupboards and bathroom vanities, from which he retired in the late 60's. Our homes were always very modest, rented accomodations, where our friends were always welcome and most of the parties with our teenage friends were in our home. Not until both Doris and Fay were married and owning their own homes did Dad and Mum purchase their first and only home at 262 John St. S. in Simcoe, two doors from Bill and Barb Helka, and Bill is here today as a Pall Bearer. This home was an old dilapidated relic, but on a large lot. Dad completely removed the inside, rebuilt it, a large garage and workshop, and it was home until 1995. Dad was widowed in April, 1989, with the passing of Mum and he fared well for several years, but then realized he sometimes never used his voice for several days, unless someone visited or the phone rang. He looked for a retirement home, chose Leisure Living in Jarvis, did all his own real estate dealings and moved in October, 1995, where he enjoyed life and made many friendships for almost 9 years. Debbie and Mike, the Administrators of Leisure Living tried and succeeded in making it home for Dad and Mike is here today as a Pall Bearer. Dad didn't have many outside interests but he loved to sing, had a good voice and became a member of the Simcoe Barbershoppers, where he enjoyed singing lead for nearly 25 years. His favourite conductor, The Music Man with a capital M, Ray Danley, is here today as a Pall Bearer. Dad and Mum never travelled far, but they did enjoy Ontario and spent much time travelling all the back roads Dad could find. He was a travelling Road Map and could tell you what the number of the road was, what the next town would be and where we could stop for a coffee and get a good piece of pie and he was always right. He studied the maps at home, but never referred to them on a trip. It was all in his head. He enjoyed humor, jokes and puns and could repeat almost every story or joke he heard or read even at 91. Even two weeks ago, when being prepared for his right knee replacement surgery, he joked with the nurse, who was setting up the IV and was having difficulty. He said "You wouldn't be having trouble because you are trying to give me POISON IVY, would you?" She didn't get it, until Fay said, "Poison Ivy" and she said, "Oh, John! You're too much for me, even at 91." Most of Dad's decisions were right ones, but to have his right knee replaced at 91 years was too risky and proved to be, as he contracted pneumonia and could not fight the infection. God spared Dad for nearly 92 years and so we say, "Thank you, Lord, for his good influence in the lives of us your daughters, Doris and Fay, and sharing in the lives of our husbands, Earl and Fred, your Grandsons, Geoff and Scott and their wives Christine and Lois and your Great Grandchildren, Kathryn, Jessica, Alexis and Noah. We will miss you immensely, Dad. Your Loving Family CHAPMAN, John, At the Henderson General Hospital, Hamilton, on Thursday, June 10, 2004 in his 92nd year. Predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Maggie (1989), his sister Greta Lofthouse (1996), and his brothers, Edward (1972) and William, (April 2004). Visitation for Mr. Chapman will be at the THOMPSON WATERS FUNERAL HOME, 102 First Ave., Port Dover (519-583-1530) on Sunday, June 13, 2004, 2:00-4:00 p.m. only. | 4014 | Samuel Swarts was born November 8, 1778 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He died October 16, 1862 in Rainham Township, Upper Canada. He is buried in the Rainham Mennonite or Hoover Cemetery at Hoover's Point. He married Anna Overholt who was born August 1781 in Pennsylvania and died December 2, 1863, buried with Samuel in the Rainham Mennonite Cemetery. Samuel came first to the Twenty Mile Creek or Jordan area of Niagara where settlement by Pennsylvania Mennonites began a few years prior to 1800. Albright, Culp, Fretz, Fry, Funk, Grobb, Gross, High, Hipple, Hoch, Honsberger, Hunsburger, Houser, Kratz, Kolb, Meyer, Moyer, Nash, Overholt, Rittenhouse, Swartz, Tufford and Wismer are the names of most of the families that came early to this area. In Grimsby, a bit west of "The Twenty" Samuel Swarts married Anna Overholt on September 5, 1801. Samuel and Anna Swarts came later to the Walpole - Rainham area of Haldimand County. This area also had been settled prior to 1800 by Mennonite families from Pennsyvania, namely Byers, Fite, Hoover, Kendig, Kendrick, Knisley, Miller, Shank, Sprenkle, Starnaman, Strickler, Stoner and Wolfe. The Reverend Michael Shank was the first Mennonite minister in Rainham. Samuel Swarts was also a Mennonite minister, as was his son Jacob. Samuel Swarts is on the 1829 assessment of Walpole, and is noted as having built the first mills on the Sandusk Creek on Lot 17 in the first Concession of Walpole Township. There is no mention of Samuel Swarts in Christian Hoover's Mill books, with the last surviving entry dated January 1811. Christian would die in December of that year. Samuel Swarts is on the 1829 assessment in Samuel Hoover's Mill book, assessed at £4 4s 10. Samuel Swarts Jr. married Catherine Hoover about 1827, but it is not known if he was of Walpole Township or still in Lincoln County. We may assume the Swarts family would likely have come to the area some time after 1811, most probably about 1826. From - 1879 Historical Atlas of Haldimand County, Walpole Township "Samuel Swarts built a sawmill on the Sandusk Creek in 1830." From "The Mills of Walpole and Rainham" published 2006 by Ross Makey: Sam Swartz Sr. was born in the U.S. in the year 1778. It is said that he came from the same area of Pennsylvania as did the Hoovers, although the Swartz family first settled in Lincoln County whereas the Hoovers came directly to Haldimand. Sam. Sr. ("Old Sam," as I prefer to call him) married Anna Overholt in Lincoln in 1801. In 1829 he came to Walpole and purchased the land that is now the Selkirk Provincial Park. The seller at that time was Tom Francis, son and heir of the infamous Captain Francis who was murdered there at the time of the 1812 war. The men of the Swartz family that came to Walpole and settled at C 1 Lot 20 were Old Sam who had just entered his 50's, Sam Jr. who was about 22, Jacob 17, and John who was about 10." | Swarts, Samuel (I01265)

| 4018 | Seaman's Chest - Donated by Dawson Hoover Selkirk, Ontario - This trunk was left with my parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Hoover, by Seaman S. Peterson who was sailing on the ill fated sailing ship Montcalm that was blown around in front of our home Lot 2, Concession 1, Township of Rainham during a severe storm one night in November 1892. My Uncly John Cooper was living in our place at that time and at daylight a rap was made on the door of his home, he opened the door and there was no one there, he waited a few minutes and the rap came again and there stood a man with no clothes on and so cold that he could not speak but he pointed to the ship which could be seen from the house, he took the man in and wrapped him in blankets till he could get a fire going and get him warmed up and get the story from him. The main mast of the vessel had broken off some where near Long Point so they were helpless and drifted with the wind till they grounded on the rocks about 300 feet off shore, there were five men and a woman cook aboard, they waited till daylight and the man was tied to a ladder and thus drifted ashore. My father who lived where Winfred Cooper lives now, saw the ship, they had no telephone then and came down with a horse and tried to get it to swim out to the ship as Abigail Becker had done earlier at Port Rowan where she rescued several people under the same circumstances, but his horse would not take to the water so he was helpless in the effort. They finally got the word spread around to Selkirk and by noon the wind had subsided enough to get a boat out of Stoney Creek which they either had to row or sail and eventually made the rescue of the remaining crew. I believe it was Darius Swarts, who fished out of the creek at that time who owned the boat which made the rescue and no doubt he was assisted by some of the Wardells who were also fishermen. The ship was loaded with Iron Ore so there was not much could be salvaged except ropes, pulleys and some of the sail. The ship broke up and sank to the bottom the following spring and since that time pieces of wood have been breaking off ot the hull and drifting ashore, the two pieces in the trunk I picked up May 30, 1967. It was one piece but I sawed it in two so the condition of the wood could be seen to a better advantage, not bad for being on the bottom of the lake for at least 74 years. The round block of wood with the tree holes in came off the same boat and until someone else can tell what it should be I will call it a Deadeye, it will not float in water. Dawson L. Hoover May 31, 1967 P. S. The man ran around the house to keep warm till Uncle John could get there to let him in. | Cooper, John Victor (I03225)

| 4032 | Silverthorn, William A., Biography WILLIAM A. SILVERTHORN. Among the capable, intelligent and selfreliant men who materially assist in maintaining the reputation of St. Clair county as a fine agricultural and stock-raising region is William A. Silverthorn, who is properously engaged in his chosen vocation on section three, Brockway township. He was born, May 15, 1867, in Elgin county, Ontario, Canada, which was likewise the birthplace of his father, Eli Silverthorn. Born April 21, 1843, Eli Silverthorn grew to manhood in Elgin county, Canada, and there began his active career as a farmer. Coming with his family to St. Clair county, Michigan, in the spring of 1882, he bought one hundred and sixty acres of land in Brockway township, on section two, and was there employed in mixed husbandry until after the death of his good wife, since which time he has lived retired, making his home with his son William. His wife, whose maiden name was Sarah Grow, was born in Canada, in 1849, and died on the home farm in Brockway township, St. Clair county, May 19, 1898, leaving five children, as follows: William A., with whom this brief sketch is chiefly concerned; Ensley, a resident of Detroit; Bertha, wife of Burt Travers, of St. Clair county; Leslie, of Brown City, Michigan; and Frank, residing in Chicago, Illinois. Receiving his rudimentary education in the public schools of Canada. William A. Silverthorn, at the age of fourteen years, came with his parents to Brockway township, where he assisted in improving a farm, remaining beneath the parental roof-tree until 1891. Going then to Chicago, he embarked in the dairy business, for eleven months working for a dairyman and afterwards being in the milk business on his own account. Disposing of his dairy interests in the fall of 1903, Mr. Silverthorn returned to St. Clair county and assumed possession of the eighty acres of land which he had purchased while he was living in Chicago. This land lies in section three, just across the road from his father's estate, and Mr. Silverthorn operates both his own and his father's farm. He devotes much of his attention to stock raising, having now a fine drove of Chester White hogs, while he is rapidly establishing a herd of thoroughbred cattle. Mr. Silverthorn married, February 22, 1893, Ellen Carless, who was born in Brockway township, and they have two children, Lloyd and Pirie. In his political relations Mr. Silverthorn is always a Republican, and uniformly supports the principles of that party.
