Shipbuilding became popular in Port Burwell as some 41 ships were built between 1834 and 1875. Among the most known ship builders were David Montague Foster and Ralph Hurley who apprenticed under George Gamble.
A highly respected boat builder of steel vessels, Ralph Hurley’s skills became widely recognized. He built sturdy steel fishing tugs and other types for more than 50 years. His last boat was launched in 1986.
