| 3954 | PERRY GIFFORD SCION OF PIONEER FAMILY Simcoe Reformer February 14, 1929 His father served in the War of 1812 - Settled on Banks of the Grand River in Haldimand County - Many Descendants of Family in this Part of Ontario The death of Perry Gifford, and old and esteemed resident of Simcoe, took place on Sunday, February 10th, in his 84th year. Though born in Haldimand County, the late Mr. Gifford had made his home in Simoe nearly all his life and was known to a host of friends in this district. Besides his wife, three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Samuel Barker of Charlotteville, Miss Edith, Miss Meda, Harvey and Frank, all at home, are left to mourn. The funeral was conducted from the family residence, 189 Maple St. on Tuesday last. Rev. F. H. Wentworth, pastor of the Baptist Church, officiated. The bearers were David Grant, James Elliot, Charles Whitehead, Culver Schram, Fred Summerhayes and George Bint. Interment was made in the family plot at Oakwood Cemetery. The following interesting account of the Gifford family has been furnished The Reformer by Mr. Lewis Brown. The late Perry Gifford was born in the Township of Rainham (sic South Cayuga), Haldimand County, on November 9th 1845. The farm on which he was born was owned and occupied by his father Perry Gifford and consisted of 200 acres lying along the Grand River, six miles south of Cayuga. It was known for many years as the Gifford farm. Perry Gifford Sr. was born in the town of New Bedford, Connecticutt on Febuary 10. 1776. the year of the American Revolution. When eighteen years of age he came to the Niagara Frontier and served under Sir John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada. A few years later he married and moved west to the Grand River settling on the farm referred to above, which he owned and occupied until the time of his death. He served as an officer in the War of 1812, and also took part in the Rebellion of 1837. By his first wife there were five children, three sons and two daughters. The eldest of the sons married Rebecca Meade, daughter of Richard Meade of Port Dover. The Gifford family was quite large and is from the branch that the Giffords of Haldimand of today come. In 1836 Perry Gifford Sr. became a widower by the loss of his wife, and two years later he married again. His bride was a girl of 21 while Mr. Gifford was then in his 63rd year. Four children were born to this union. Of these Perry Gifford Jr. was the youngest. Perry Gifford Sr. died when little Perry was five years old and shortly afterwards the young widow with her three children came and settled in Woodhouse, Norfolk County. * * * From Les Barker - Perry Arthur Gifforf Jr., 1845-1929, was married to Sarah Barber. After they were married Perry and Sarah bought a house at the corner of Maple and Metcalfe Streets in Simcoe, Ontario. Together they had eleven children: Mary Ann, married to Samuel Barker; Ella J.; Alice M.; Sarah L.; Edith Isabel (twin); Ada Victoria (twin); Harvey Perry A.; Frank W.E.; Armeda May; Lorne Ernest; Cecil Earl. According to Perry Jr.'s obituary in the Simcoe Reformer on February 14, 1929 (Reel #N186, OA, page 12), Perry was survived by his wife, Sarah, three daughters and two sons, "Mrs. Samuel Barker of Charlotteville, Miss Edith, Miss Meda, Harvey and Frank, all at home". Perry and Sarah Barber were married for 62 years. She died 11 days after his death. | 3972 | Peter Gordon - Watchmaker Peter Gordon was born in Mortlach, Dufftown on 25 October 1833. He was the eldest son of John and Isabella Gordon and was to become a successful watchmaker, first in Huntly and later in London. He served as an apprentice under his uncle, William 'watchie' Gordon, watch and clock maker in Dufftown. He later travelled to London and worked as a 'journeyman' watchmaker under a Mr Robertson in Kingsland Road, Hackney, returning to Huntly in 1859 when he established a watchmaking and jewellers shop at 1 Duke Street, Huntly. According to an advert in the Huntly Express, in August 1873 he moved to larger premises, ‘to that shop opposite no. 4 Duke Street’. While in Huntly, he served for three years on the Police Commission and subsequently served for 15 years with the London Scottish Regiment, obtaining the long-service medal in 1895. He married Elizabeth Ragg on 2nd June 1861 in Dufftown and they were to have 8 children. The census for 1871 shows the family living at 1 Duke Street, Huntly. Peter owned several other properties in Huntly, namely, 6 & 8 Old Road, Huntly and 38 & 40 Duke Street, Huntly, and made 'considerable money' from his business interests there. In late 1868, possibly November, Peter & Elizabeth employed a domestic servant by the name of Mary Ann Addison. Shortly after, Peter began an affair with her which appears to have continued until June 1875. As a result Mary became pregnant and on 8 February 1876, she gave birth to an illegitimate male child at Burnside Street, Portsoy. Mary was 31 years old at the time of the birth.. The child was named Charles. The 1891 census records a Mary Ann Addison, age 46, living at Braeheads,Portsoy with a Charles Gordon, age 15, and another child, Alexander Addison, age 5. . In March 1876, Mary Ann Addison had begun court action against Peter to obtain maintenance for the child. Once his wife became aware of the affair and resulting child, the couple separated. The 1881 census records Peter as living as a lodger at 38 Duke Street Huntly, in the house of Isabella & David Collie. Also listed is Mary Taylor, age 2 years, boarder. Eventually in August 1880, Elizabeth moved to Canada taking their children with her, to be near her only living relatives. She settled in Port Dover, Ontario. Peter, left on his own, moved to London in 1883 to commence business there and he appears to have taken over the shop at 482 Kingsland Road, Dalston that belonged to Mr Robertson and where he had worked previously. He employed a large number of assistants. In 1888 Elizabeth began divorce proceedings, citing adultery following the affair between her husband and Mary Ann Addison. In the official divorce papers Elizabeth alleged 'cruelty, violence and insult'. She claimed that following the birth of their youngest child in 1875, Peter ordered her to leave the house and threatened to burn the house down around her unless she left. Clearly all was not well in the Gordon family household. The divorce was finally granted on 27 June 1889. Elizabeth eventually moved to America with her 8 children, arriving in the USA in 1889. The 1900 USA census records her living in Northampton, Massetchusetts, with her 2 youngest children John & William. Peter continued to live in London until his death in 1916. The 1891 census shows Peter living at 482 Kingsland Road, Hackney with Sophia J Dunbar, servant/housekeeper, age 50. 10 years later the 1901 census shows him living at 1 Woodlea Road, Stoke Newington, aged 67, with a 'domestic servant' Sophia Jane Dunbar, aged 60. Peter died on 13 September 1916, aged 83, in Hackney Hospital and, despite aparently having considerable wealth earlier in his life, was buried in a common grave in Abney Park Cemetery, Stoke Newington on 16 September 1916.. The impression one gets from the story of Peter is that having served his apprenticeship, he became a successful and wealthy businessman and a respected member of the community in Huntly, where he owned several properties. However, an affair and an illegitimate child resulted in divorce and probable disgrace within the family and wider community. Following the divorce, he appears to have sold up in Huntly and moved to London where he continued working into his old age.. The fact he was buried in a common grave in London would suggest he had lost the wealth he had created and had been to some extent ostracised from the family in Scotland, as one might expect him to have been buried in Scotland. However, it is reported that some relatives from Macduff attended his funeral. This would probably have included my grandfather George, who corressponded with his Uncle Peter throughout the early part of the 1st World War. We have several postcards that George wrote, addressed to Peter at 1 Woodlea Road, Stoke Newington. | Gordon, Peter (I21394)

| 3977 | Port Dover Maple Leaf: -- Last Tuesday forenoon a very sad accident happened to Mr. Charles C. Low, St. George Street. It appears that Mr. Low was walking down the G.T.R. tracks towards the station, and when on the curve near the tannery a freight train bore down on him from behind. As he did not either see the train or hear the warnings of the whistle and bell, and the grade being a heavy down one it was impossible to stop before reaching him, he was consequently struck and throuwn down and his left leg taken off above the ankle. Assistance was promptly on hand and he was carried to the house of his sister-in-law, Mrs. E.J. Low, where he resided. All the local physicians were soon in attendance and decided to cut off the limb above the knee, as being the only chance to save his likfe. This was done but the shock was too great and shortly afterwards he passed peacefully away. The accident and its fatal ending was heard of by all with great regret and sympathy for his relatives. | 3979 | PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD 1906 - 20th Century History of Berrien County, Michigan LEAVITT CAMFIELD, a self-made man, an energetic citizen, upright and industrious, was for a number of years closely identified with the growth and improvement of Berrien County, Mich. Our subject, a native of Ontario, Canada, was born in 1835. His father, Rev. Ziba Camfield, was a prominent Baptist minister of the Dominion, and was one of the earnest Christian workers of his day. Guided by excellent influence and trained to the habits of useful thrift and self-reliance, Mr. Camfield attained to a vigorous and enterprising manhood. He received a good common school education, and in after years constantly added to his knowledge by intelligent observation and reading. A man of advanced ideas and interested in the subject of reforms, he was an ardent advocate of temperance, and while residing in Canada often lectured upon that subject. In 1858, Mr. Camfield was married to Miss Carrie Omstead, daughter of Harvey Omstead, a native of Canada. Unto the husband and estimable wife was born a family of five children, one son and four daughters. Elva became the wife of Byron Drake, a leading citizen of the county; Cynthia is the wife of Gale Handy, who is successful agriculturist of the county; Mary is the wife of Frank Brown, a prominent young farmer of Berrien County; Martha died in infancy; Bradford A., the only son, after a thorough preparatory course of study, entered the Bennett Medical College at Chicago, and graduating from that institution remained in the Garden City engaged in practice with Dr. Henry Olin. Later, Dr. Camfield made a specialty of the eye and ear, and graduated from a celebrated institution devoted especially to the study of those organs. He has achieved marked success in his practice and is widely known and highly esteemed as a physician and citizen. In the spring of 1865, our subject located permanently in Michigan, working for two years at his trade of mechanic in St. Joseph. At the expiration of that time he began the cultivation of a farm of thirty acres, which he brought up to a high state of productiveness and improved with substantial and commodious buildings. Mr. Camfiled died in 1874, regretted by a large acquaintance and mourned deeply by his friends and family. The wife, to whom was left the care and responsibility of rearing and educating the children, has enjoyed the satisfaction of seeing them grow up to an intelligent and honored manhood and womanhood. Mr. Camfield was in many respects an exceptional man. Devoted to the betterment of his fellow-creatures, he was a valued member of the Good Templars of Canada, and throughout his life exerted his influence for the real good and advancement of others. He was politically a Republican and took an earnest interest in the management of local and national affairs. Mr. and Mrs. Camfield, both from early years members of the Baptist Church, were ever foremost in the promotion of its social and benevolent work. The parents of Mrs. Camfield yet survive and reside in Canada. Surrounded by her children the widow of our subject spends here busy days, and in the retrospect of her well spent life may view with unalloyed satisfaction the successful termination of her struggles to rear to positions of usefulness and influence the son and daughters intrusted to her faithful care Norfolk Marriages - L. | 3980 | PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD 1906 - 20th Century History of Berrien County, Michigan WILLIAM CAMFIELD was the pioneer in "the spraying of fruit trees" in Berrien county. He began this work twenty years ago and demonstrated that it was followed by such excellent results that the custom soon came into general use. He has long been known as one of the prominent and successful fruit growers of this portion of the state and now lives in Hagar township, where he has valuable property. He was born in County Norfolk, Ontario, Canada, October 9, 1832, and was reared to manhood in that country. He remained at home until his marriage, which, however, was celebrated before he was twenty years of age. The lady of his choice was Miss Sarah M. Ferguson, and they removed from Norfolk county to Walsingham*, on Long Point Bay, an arm of Lake Erie, where Mr. Camfleld improved two farms. He there resided until the spring of 1866, when he came to Berrien county, Michigan. He had a brother, Leavitt Camfield, who had been a resident of St. Joseph for two years at that time and was engaged in blacksmithing. William Camfleld had a contract to put in wood which he was piling on the bank of Lake Erie, when a freshet swept it into the lake and he thus lost three thousand cords. This left him without financial resources and in this condition he came to Michigan. Here he cleared a part of a farm for his brother, the tract lying just north of Benton Harbor, and upon that place Leavitt Camfleld made his home until his death, which was occasioned by the kick of a horse. He erected the octagonal brick house a mile and a quarter north of Benton Harbor, which is one of the landmarks in this section of the county. In 1867 William Camfleld located on his present farm, first purchasing seven acres where he lives on the border of Hagar and Benton townships, three and a half miles north of the city of Benton Harbor. He erected here a log house and for thirty-eight years has resided continuously upon this place. As his financial resources have increased he has added to his farm until it now comprises twenty-nine and a half acres. He started in debt for the seven acres, for which he paid seven hundred dollars, and in addition he owed two hundred dollars. His seven acres was all covered with timber and he had to cut a road to get to it, making the road along the town line. Two years later he paid one thousand dollars for five acres adjoining. This was planted to berries. He worked energetically, persistently and capably in the development and care of his property and the year 1873 found him free from debt. He then arranged to purchase sixty acres of land for nine thousand dollars in company with his son-in-law. This he had also purchased on time. It was planted to peaches but the yellows took his trees and in two years he let the property revert to the original owner, losing two thousand dollars on the deal. He then engaged in lumbering, in which he continued for seven years. He got out the lumber and timber for The Lora; the first steamboat that was built in this locality, selecting the timber in the woods. It was cut and hewed by him, after which it was sawed. He would take contracts tor lumbering and at times kept several teams, having as high as seventy one winter. He employed a number of choppers and sometimes boarded his men. One winter he cleared one hundred and fourteen acres of heavy timber at Sister Lakes fifteen miles from Benton Harbor. Half of this was sent to Benton Harbor and the remaining half to Dowagiac. In his lumbering operations he prospered and in the meantime he operated his little farm of twelve acres, and also turned his attention to dealing in fruit. He would purchase fruit on the trees and in one season paid four thousand dollars for peaches on the trees. He bought fruit in this way from fifteen to twenty years and generally met with success in this undertaking. He added more land from time to time, buying in small tracts and for one tract of five acres paid seven hundred and fifty dollars. It is eighteen years since he bought a ten-acre tract in Benton township opposite his present farm for eight hundred dollars, and eighteen years ago he married his present wife. He deeded to his son by his first wife fifteen acres of land, but three years later he paid him twenty-three hundred dollars for this same tract: This gives him now twenty-nine and a half acres near Lake Michigan. It is all high-grade fruit land, unsurpassed by any in the county and devoted to the raising of fruit, including apples, pears, peaches, cherries and grapes. He has sold his apple crop for fifteen hundred dollars in a single season. In 1905 he had over thirteen hundred dollars clear income above all expenses of operation. In 1903 he took in three thousand dollars, in 1904 fourteen hundred dollars and in 1905 two thousand dollars, clearing one thousand dollars above all expenses. He makes a specialty of Dutchess apples, the trees being worth one hundred dollars apiece and if his entire farm were covered with trees as good as his one hundred trees of this variety, it would pay an interest on a basis of one hundred thousand dollars. Mr. Camfield has great faith in a brilliant future for this section of the country as a fruit belt and has often expressed himself that "this country is the best place for a live man but the poorest for a dead one to be in." He is growing for commercial purposes and his orchards are in excellent condition, being cared for along modern progressive methods. Formerly Mr. Camfield engaged quite extensively in raising berries, having seven hundred dollars worth of berries picked in a single day in 1874, and for a time he was known as the berry king of the county. He was the pioneer in the process of spraying trees, beginning this twenty years ago in order to exterminate the codling moth on appIe trees. The result surprised all and the second year he sprayed for several other fruit-growers of the community. Leading men said after the crop was harvested that he had added six hundred dollars to their profits. One man said an hour's work of this kind in his orchard paid him one hundred dollars. One man refused to pay for spraying, saying that it had hurt several trees. Mr. Camfield therefore bought the man's crop for five hundred dollars less the spraying bill and a few weeks after. the spraying was done he sold the orchard for fifteen hundred dollars, thus clearing one thousand dollars. His efforts in this direction being so successful he was then sought to write articles for papers as to the benefit of spraying and is considered an authority upon the subject. In July, 1887, Mr. Camfield lost his first wife after they had lived together for thirty- four years. On the 31st of December, 1888, he married Miss Exilea C. Gordon, who was reared in Brooklyn, New York, but was visiting her sister in Berrien county. Her family are of French lineage. Her father owned an island in Lake Champlain, on which she was born and by reason of that fact she was named Exilea. She was reared, however, in Brooklyn. Her father was part owner of a vessel on Lake Champlain. Coming to the west to visit she met Mr Camfield while in Berrien county and gave him her hand in marriage. Two children have been born unto them: John Nellis, nine years of age; and Victor Newton, three years of age. By his first marriage Mr. Camfield had seven children. Two sons, Charles E. and Fred Lorenzo, are fruit-growers of this vicinity. George Allen is a farmer of Mason County. Alexa is the wife of John McKenzie, of Hagar township. The others are deceased. Mr. Camfield gives his entire time and attention to the supervision of his fruit raising interests and in operating the place employs two or three men. In his political views he is a Republican and rather independent. His efforts have been a practical demonstration of the value of this district as fruit producing center and his success has been the direct result of his untiring labors. * William Camfield was born in Townsend Township, Norfolk County, then moved to Walsingham Township which is also in Norfolk County. On the 1870 Census of Post Office Benton Harbor, Benton, Berrien, Michigan are: Camfield William, Aged 37, Male, White, Farm Laborer, Value of Real Estate 2000, Value of Personal Estate 150, Born Canada Camfield Sarah, Aged 38, Female, White, Born Canada Camfield Alexia, Aged 15, Female, White, Born Canada Camfield Elijha, Aged 13, Male, White, Born Canada Camfield Charles, Aged 11, Male, White, Born Canada Camfield Lorenzo, Aged 9, Male, White, Born Canada Camfield Allen, Aged 8, Male, White, Born Michigan | Camfield, William (I02826)

Pearce, 1973 A crumpled letter in a waste-paper basket in a federal civil servant's office at Ottawa was indirectly responsible for the origin of the rich flue-cured tobacco industry in Norfolk and adjacent counties. The letter, written in the year 1919, was directed to the Dominion Experimental Farms at Ottawa. The writer was an official of a fruit farm syndicate then operating extensive orchard holdings at Lynedoch in Norfolk County....Henry Freeman decided to answer the letter himself and arranged to go to Lynedoch in Norfolk County on his own time the following week-end to secure soil samples....As a result of his favourable analysis of the sandy soil at Lynedoch in Norfolk County, Henry Freeman had decided to experiment with a crop of burley tobacco here in 1920. It proved successful and he tried again the following year. But the market for burley tobacco dropped out of sight....In 1922 he concluded that he should try flue-cured instead of burley tobacco....It was about this time that Henry Freeman and Bill Pelton became very friendly at Harrow....They were ideally suited for partnership, one an experienced tobacco grower, the other a very well-informed agricultural specialist, with a wide knowledge of soils, fertilizers, seeds, etc....Messrs Freeman and Pelton produced their first crop of flue-cured tobacco on the Chrysler farm in the summer of 1923....Mr. Freeman left the government service in 1926, when he moved to Simcoe and gave his full time to tobacco-growing....Henry A. Freeman was a native of South Carolina who had come to Ottawa via the University of Wisconsin where he had specialized in soil chemistry....Bill Pelton, as he was familiarly known to tobacco growers both in Canada and the United States, was also an American Citizen....By this time each of the two partners had purchased a farm for himself, making five tobacco farms under their ownership. The industry had begun to attract outside capital and Toronto and Guelph financial interests made an offer for the five farms which was accepted. A syndicate, known as Ontario Tobacco Plantations, was launched with Henry Freeman becoming manager. Realizing the potential of the flue-cured industry, both Mr. Freeman and Mr. Pelton began to purchase farms on their own account in various parts of Norfolk County. Mr. Freeman accumulated a total of fourteen farms and was the largest individual grower in the Norfolk area in the early days.... | Foster, James Allen "Colonel" (I09251)

| 4000 | Query from CousinConnect.com March 21, 2004 - I am looking for information on the Bonaccorso family. The originated for Trabia Sicily. My ggrandfather is Filippo Bonaccorso b. Dec 11 1860 in Trabia. d. ? in Ontario Canada. His parents names were Salvatore Bonaccorso and Teresa Tardia or Tardio. He married San Salvatora Fardella in Sept. 1893 in Kansas City Missouri. She was born Sept. 1973. Her parents names were Santa Mary Ceravola and Leonardo Fardella. Filippo went to the States about 1890 and San Salvatora went over about 1893. They had 2 children in the U.S. and they moved to Canada where they had 10 more children who lived. Both Filippo and Salvatora are buried in Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. We also have recently found out that Filippo had a brother named Matteo Bonaccorso who went over to the States and stayed there having married. We have alot of info pertaining to Filippo and his family and on down but we would like to find some more info on his family from Trabia. being an Sicilian family I would imagine there were many more children from Teresa and Salvatore. We have heard rumors of a sister , but have no other info on her. If any one can help please contact me. Other names in our family line are: Domenico, Morrell, Molina, Rizzo, Moley, and many more. | Bonaccorso, Salvatore (I18937)
