Port Dover Maple Leaf: -- Last Tuesday forenoon a very sad accident happened to Mr. Charles C. Low, St. George Street. It appears that Mr. Low was walking down the G.T.R. tracks towards the station, and when on the curve near the tannery a freight train bore down on him from behind. As he did not either see the train or hear the warnings of the whistle and bell, and the grade being a heavy down one it was impossible to stop before reaching him, he was consequently struck and throuwn down and his left leg taken off above the ankle. Assistance was promptly on hand and he was carried to the house of his sister-in-law, Mrs. E.J. Low, where he resided. All the local physicians were soon in attendance and decided to cut off the limb above the knee, as being the only chance to save his likfe. This was done but the shock was too great and shortly afterwards he passed peacefully away. The accident and its fatal ending was heard of by all with great regret and sympathy for his relatives. (Simcoe Reformer 22-Feb 1907) This report omits the fact that Charles Low was a deaf mute)
