The following interesting account of the Gifford family has been furnished The Reformer by Mr. Lewis Brown.
The late Perry Gifford was born in the Township of Rainham (sic South Cayuga), Haldimand County, on November 9th 1845. The farm on which he was born was owned and occupied by his father Perry Gifford and consisted of 200 acres lying along the Grand River, six miles south of Cayuga. It was known for many years as the Gifford farm.
Perry Gifford Sr. was born in the town of New Bedford, Connecticutt on Febuary 10. 1776. the year of the American Revolution. When eighteen years of age he came to the Niagara Frontier and served under Sir John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada. A few years later he married and moved west to the Grand River settling on the farm referred to above, which he owned and occupied until the time of his death. He served as an officer in the War of 1812, and also took part in the Rebellion of 1837.
By his first wife there were five children, three sons and two daughters. The eldest of the sons married Rebecca Meade, daughter of Richard Meade of Port Dover. The Gifford family was quite large and is from the branch that the Giffords of Haldimand of today come.
In 1836 Perry Gifford Sr. became a widower by the loss of his wife, and two years later he married again. His bride was a girl of 21 while Mr. Gifford was then in his 63rd year. Four children were born to this union. Of these Perry Gifford Jr. was the youngest. Perry Gifford Sr. died when little Perry was five years old and shortly afterwards the young widow with her three children came and settled in Woodhouse, Norfolk County.
