| 109 | Amelia Underhill Ryerse was born on February 02, 1798 at Port Ryerse in Norfolk County, then part of Upper Canada; the daughter of Samuel Vanderhoff Ryerse; the founder of the settlement on Lake Erie, and his wife Sarah Underhill (The Widow Davenport) Originally from New Jersey, her father was forced from his home after the American Revolution,,and relocated to New Brunswick. Like other Loyalists he found the soil there unsuitable for farming, and after petitoning British General John Graves Simcoe, then Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada; for better land, was given a grant on the north shore of Lake Erie, where he founded Port Ryerse. Throughout the War of 1812; Amelia kept a diary, which was later published by her cousin, Egerton Ryerson; which provides us with an excellent insight into the lives and thoughts of women during this time in Canadian history. Amelia would continue the diary for many years, recording the changes in her life and the country. Following is her account of an attack by American forces on her home in 1814. She was just 16 and her mother, a widow. "In May of 1814 we had several days of heavy fog. On the 18th, I think, the fog lifted. We saw seven or eight ships under the American flag anchored off Ryerse with a small number of small Boats floating by the side of each ship. As the fog clered away they hoisted sail and dropped down three miles below us, opposite Port Dover. On the following morning, the 25th of May, as my Mother and myself were at breakfast, the Dogs made an unusual barking. I went to the door to discover the cause. When I looked up I saw the hillside and the fields as the eye could reach covered with American soldiers. They had landed at Patterson's Creek. Burnt the Mills and village of Port Dover and then marched to Ryerse. Two men stepped from the ranks, selected some large chips, came into the room where we were standing and took coals from the hearth, without speaking. My mother knew instinctively what they were going to do. She went out and asked to see the commanding officer, a gentleman rode up to her and said he was the person she asked for. She entreated him to spare her property and said that she was a widow with a young family. He answered her civilly & respectfully and regretted that his orders were to Burn, but that He would spare the house, which he did, & said in justification that the Buildings were used as barracks and the mill furnished flour for British Troops. Very soon we saw a column of dark smoke arise from every Building and what at early morn had been a prosperous homestead, at noon there remained only smouldering ruins. The following day Col. Talbot and the Militia under his command marched to Fort Norfolk. The Americans were then safe on board their own ships & well on their way to their own shores. My Father had been dead less than two years, & little remained of all his labours, excepting the orchards and cultivated fields. It would not be easy to describe my mother's feelings as she looked at the desolation around her." In April of 1815, Amelia met Captain John Harris, and they were married on June 28, 1815. John was born on June 21, 1782; in Devonshire, England, the son of the local curate. At the age of 12 he ran away to sea and eventually joined the Royl Navy. He served in England and South America, before being sent to Kingston in March of 1813; and later participated in the battle of Crysler's Farm. After the war, he remained in Upper Canada, where he joined a team that was surveying the Thousand Islands and Great Lakes. Amelia and John first settled in Kingston, where she assisted her husband with his survey work. On September 1, 1817; John retired from the Navy and the Harrises moved back to Port Ryerse, where they tried farming; while John continued his work as a surveyor. He was an advocate of the advancement of scientific study and belonged to several academic societies. In 1832, the Harris family purchased land in London, Ontario, where they built Eldon House, moving there in 1834. John became active in local and provincial politics, and served as Treasurer of London District for thirty years. He died on August 25, 1850, two days after his daughter Mary' s wedding. Amelia died at Eldon House on March 24, 1882; but her diaries live on as a reminder of life in Canada as it was more than a century ago; through the eyes of a Canadian woman. | Ryerse, Amelia Underhill (I19516)

| 111 | AN OLD WAR STORY There is "An Old War Story" long past the time for telling. During the War of 1812 and at a time when the Americans occupied the Niagara and Sandwich areas, then temporarily gained control of Lake Erie, a group of residents of the Long Point Settlement, London District, aided the Americans. This was more than likely due to dissatisfaction with the Government which was in place at the time, judging by some events documented by the Courts of the Quarter Sessions in the early 1800s. At one time General de Rottenburg had ordered the Militia disbanded west of Kingston. Lieutenant Colonel Henry Bostwick learned of activities of this band of marauders and took it upon himself to march with a group of the Norfolk Militia volunteers, forty five in all, from Dover to the mouth of the Nanticoke Creek and confront the bandits at the home of one John Dunham. On the morning of November 13th, 1813, they surprised the group, killing some and taking others prisoner, with one of the Militia, Benjamin Chandler, also losing his life. Thus took place "The Battle of Nanticoke." Others were captured and taken prisoner later. The Nanticoke prisoners were taken to York Gaol, then the following spring taken to Ancaster, where their trials for High Treason continued from May 23rd 1814 ‘til June 21st 1814 and were known as "The Bloody Assizes of Ancaster." Fifteen men were convicted, ten of which were from the London District. Eight of these convicts, six from the London District - John Dunham, Isaiah Brink, Adam Chrysler, Daton Lindsay, Benjamin Simmonds and George Peacock the Younger, along with Noah Payne Hopkins of Queenston and Aaron Stevens of Niagara Township were hanged on a common gallows at Burlington Heights on July 20th,1814. Three more - Jacob Overholser of Niagara and Isaac Pettit and Garrett Null of the London District died the following spring in prison, of the ague or jail fever. Cornelius Howey of the Burford Gore probably died of wounds received at Nanticoke, after pleading guilty. These men left young families to be cared for and raised by others, and had their property confiscated and sold by the Government. Isaac Pettit was a brother in law of John Dickson, who on or about the 28th day of October, 1814, was to commit "The Murder of Captain Francis" at the mouth of the Sandusk Creek. Both Pettit and Dickson were sons in law of Reuben Green of Townsend, who lost his life that same night in the skirmish at Sugar Loaf. A deposition was taken of Elizabeth (Green) Dickson when she returned from Buffalo, after her husband was shot during the skirmish at Sugar Loaf, made it to Buffalo where he died and was buried before she returned to Upper Canada. According to her their intent was to kill William Francis, Thomas Francis, William Drake and Colonel Thomas Talbot. At the Assizes William Francis had testified against Isaiah Brink, Adam Chrysler and Isaac Pettit and his son Thomas Francis testified against Garrett Null, John Johnson, Adam Chrysler, Isaac Pettit and John Dunham, so the motive for the murder was most likely revenge. - Researched by Helen Bingleman and Barbara Roadhouse From Barbara Roadhouse, descendant of Adam Chrysler through his daughter Charity Chrysler who married John Hall - "He was handed down the sentence of drawn and quartered at the Bloody Assizes of Ancaster in l8l4 as a traitor to Canada. It is not known at this time when his wife Elizabeth Chrysler died. I could find 5 Chrysler children who lived and married in Haldimand Co. Adam above is the only Chrysler that I could find in this county, therefore reasonable to assume these then are their children, not to mention the interaction between these families with the exception of the two who ended with their Grandparents Wanner. Also I can prove their son John." Document re Reuben Green Sr. involvement - Location Ticket Complaint about Reuben Green - "His Excellency the Lt. Governor informed the board that a recent communication has been made to him from respectable Authority, that the family of Reuben Green of Woodhouse in the District of London have so late as 5 Jany Inst. received grants as Sons & Daughters Children of a U. E. notwithstanding The said R. Green joined the enemy during the late war & was killed at Sugar Loaf in arms against his Majesty after having burned and plundered the house of Cpt. Wm. Francis and murdered him in the Defense of it - and I request the advice of council as to what recourse if any he is __ to adopt to avert a similar __ in future. Wherefore the Council unanimously recommend that no petition from Sons or Daughters of U. E. Loyalists be hereafter given without certificate signed by the Chairman and Clerk of the Peace that the parent retained his loyalty during the " | Chrysler, Adam (I15995)

When Mary Jane marries David Barber in 1861 she is Mary Jane Silverthorn, also with the birth of her daughter Letentia May in 1887. With the birth of her daughter Lillie Minerva in 1890 she is given as Mary Jane Bloom. At Aquilla's marriage in 1898 he names her as Mary Jane Bloom, at Abraham's marriage in 1906 he names his mother as Mary Jane Garner. At David Barber's marriage in 1913 he names his mother as Mary Jane Garner, when he registers her death in 1924 he names her father as John Bloom, her mother Ann Weir. At Lillie Minerva's marriage in 1923 her mother is given as Mary Jane Bloom. Mary Jane is always born Ontario on the census, but when registering her death her son David says she was born Ireland. Online condolences at ferrisfuneral.com.9857922 From a February 2011 Simcoe Reformer column by Keith AshleyJackson's Pharmacy on the corner of Robinson and Kent Street (currently occupied by the Gospel Lighthouse). Across from the pharmacy was Bonaccorso's Fruit Market. It was a mainstay on that corner for many years. Later it was the home for Rudy Halmo Jewellery store. Moving south we come to the Tartan Restaurant. It was run by the Cross family and was one of the finer eateries in town. Just a store south was Martin's Smoke and Barbershop. Bill Martin was involved in many aspects of Simcoe life, from sports to politics, and between Bill and Morley Spicer gave haircuts to thousands of Simcoe residents. Across the street stood Sutton's Wholesale and a taxi company. I think it might have been Coates Taxi. South of the Tartan was the old Lyric Theatrewith a lady who played the piano during the old silent movies. Later the theatre became a hardware store owned by Wally Winter. | Bonaccorso, Thomas Anthony (I18946)
