| 812 | From: The Sherk Family by Thomas A. Sherk: Herbert was known to his friends affectionately as Hub. He resided in Rainham Township, Haldimand County, Ontario. He had one child who died at birth, and also an adopted son named Martin. He died tragically in an automobile accident when his car was hit by a train at a railroad crossing near Stevensville, Ontario. Herbert's brother, Andrew Sherk, grandfather of the author, was a passenger in the car at the time of the accident. Andrew managed to jump clear of the car seconds before it was hit by the train, thereby saving his life. In 1917 he was ordained a minister in the Mennonite Church, which was his chosen church. He served many years in the Mennonite Church in South Cayuga. On October 21, 1946, he moved to Elmira, Waterloo County, Ontario, where he continued his ministry. He married Permelia Elliott Stuart May 1, 1867 in Lawrence, Michigan. PERMELIA ELLIOTT was born March 19, 1830, at Greenwood, Stuben County, New York State.She was married to Charles A. Stuart (1825-1863) in April of 1847 at Lawrence, Van Buren County, Michigan, by Justice of the Peace. They first lived near Decatur, Michigan then moved to Forest City, Chickasaw County, Iowa (on Wapsipinicon River) where Lydia Jane Stuart was born February 15, 1859, and where her father died in 1863 (from bone scrofula after a year and eight months in bed) when Lydia was four years old. Grandma Stuart returned to Lawrence, Michigan in 1864, and was married 1st May, 1867 (by Methodist Minister) to George Mabee. They moved to Port Rowan in 1867, before Confederation. Family records say Permelia Elliott was born at Painted Post, Greenwood Township, Steuben County, State of New York, but Painted Post is in Erwin Township GEORGE ELLIOTT MABEE was born about 1869 in Charlotteville Township, Norfolk County, Ontario and died September 1946 at Marshall's Bay near Arnprior, Renfrew County, Ontario. "There are a lot of things to remember," says Dalkeith native, Alexander MacLeod with a laugh when asked to describe fond memories of the 150-year-old church. MacLeod can still hear the Gaelic songs, remember the camaraderie of the lawn socials and smell the smoke of the church fire in 1948 when given time to reflect upon his life with the Kirk Hill church. "Four or five men would get up and sing Gaelic songs," he said . Although MacLeod could not speak Gaelic, the language brought a sense of home because he often heard his mother talking Gaelic with his grandmother. A bilingual minister served at the church until 1922 when Rev. A.
