| 5521 | THE WAR OP THE REVOLUTION; ALPHABETICALLY ARRANGED PRELIMINARY HISTORICAL ESSAY. By LORENZO SABINE. , BOSTON: CHARLES C. LITTLE AND JAMES BROWN. MDCCCXLVII BENJAMIN BECRAFT A Tory leader, cruel, and noted for deeds of blood. He boasted to his associates, of having assisted to massacre the family of a Mr. Vrooman, in Schoharie, New York. The family, he said, were soon despatched, except a boy of fourteen, who ran from the house, when he started in pursuit, overtook him, and cut his throat, took his scalp, and hung his body across the fence. After the peace, he had the hardihood to return to Schoharie. He was seized, stripped naked and bound to a tree, and whipped nearly to death by ten men, some of whom had been his prisoners, and had heard him recount this exploit. Thus beaten, he was dismissed with a charge never to show himself in that country again, an injunction which he carefully kept. | Becraft, Benjamn B. (I24677)

| 5523 | To Palatine in 1671, arrived Pennsylvania August 24, 1717 From George Shank's research " Christian Shank ( Schenck ) and his three sons and three daughters arrived in America in the year 1717. They were part of the contingent of 363 Swiss- German Mennonites who had assembled around Mannheim, Germany, and who had sailed in three small ships from Rotterdam, Holland in June of 1717. The rather large group was under the leadership of Benedict Brackbill, a well-known Mennonite preacher and teacher. In volume 3 of the Pennsylvania Colonial Records, at page 29, there is an account of the three ships masters, Captains Eyers, Tower, and Richards, belatedly reporting the 363 passengers in to the authorities on September 8, 1717. I have corresponded with a Lancastor County, Pennsylvania genealogist, Martin H. Brackbill, who is a direct descendant of Benedict. He states that the three ships arrived at Philadelphia, apparently together on August 24, 1717." " Although not positively proven, research indicates that Christian Schenck was born near Basel, Switzerland about 1665. As a child he was likely a member of one of the four Schenck (Shank) families who were Mennonites and who, hounded by the Roman Catholic Church for their religious beliefs, fled into Germany from Switzerland in 1671. As previously stated, the names of the heads of these Schenck families were included in the list of those Swiss Mennonites who were living at Osthoven, near Manheim, Germany in 1672. Although nothing positive is known of the wife of Christian Shank, Martin Brackbill, the genealogist, suggests that Benedict Brackbill's sister Barbara, may have been married to our ancestor, Christian. No research has been undertaken by me on the early years of Christian Shank, so the foregoing is pretty speculative. It should be noted on Christian's chart, however, that he named one of his daughters, Barbara, and that the name was carried on down in later generations. This would add some substance to the speculation that Christian's wife was Barbara Brackbill." " There is a deed recorded in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in Deed Book WW, on pages 300 through 305, which is a vital document in the genealogy of our Shank family and of Christian Shank in particular. This lengthy deed gives the first good, solid proof of the circumstances surrounding our first American ancestor. The document, although not written until January 7, 1758, traces the title to 265 acres of land located in Lancaster County and recites that Christian Shank and Benedict Brackbill, on September 25, 1717, jointly, with half interest for each, bought the 530 acre tract of land that had been patented to John Funk in 1711. This would add a bit more weight to the possibility that Barbara Brackbill was the wife of Christian, it appearing that some sort of family relationship did exist between the Brackbill and Shank families. The Funk tract was right in the middle of the 6400 acre tract granted to the Mennonites in 1710. The historical marker located at the intersection of Hans Herr Drive and Penn Grant Road further corroborates the location of the property. Maps and surveys of early Lancaster County, prepared by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1933 show the 530 acre tract to be rather long and narrow and extending over three- fourths of a mile in a north and south direction. Located on Pequea Creek ( pronounced PECKWAY), it is on today's map at the west city limits of Strasburg in Strasburg township. Pequea Creek runs through the northern part of Christian's land, as well as through the farm of Christian's son Michael. " | Schenk, Christian (I00280)

| 5524 | Tradition tells us Henry Hoover was here in Upper Canada but returned to Pennsylvania. The only child we know of, Susannah who married George Boyer, came to Upper Canada and purchased the front 100 acres of Lot 24, Concession 1, Walpole from her aunt and uncle, George and Susannah Wolfe of the Town of Clarence, New York in 1834. When Henry signed his receipts for inheritance in 1811 and 1821 they are dated within a day or two of Anna Stouffer's and George Eister's and it would appear they are all still living in Pennsylvania and that the Executors Abraham and David travelled there to settle the estate. One of the receipts was witnessed by his nephew John Eyster. | Hoover, Henry (I00011)

| 5543 | We believe John Hoover was dead by 1793 as there is a copy of a document referring to the Chattels of J H deceased in Christian Hoover's account book. He was certainly dead by 1807 when Jacob Huber made out his will as he refers to a daughter, an only child of John Hoover, deceased. November 19, 1793 - From Christian Hoover's Account Book, page 36. We consider this to refer to John Hoover, son of Jacob and Barbara: The Condition of this Present Vendue held this 19th day of November 1793 on Goods and Chattels of J. H. Deceased. Following viz The highest Bidder to be the Buyer for all goods Under ten shillings. Ready money is Expected. Any Person or Persons buying to any Amount and not Compling with the above Conditions in Two days or when Required by the Subscriber ther accounts to be Considerd as Cash Recoverd Accordingly & Given under our hands this 19th day of November 1793. Carls, Copy Dan Stoufer, Administrators John Hoover's 1792 bond due to Jacob Hoover in 1802 for two hundred pounds, document filed with Jacob Huber's Will. Money probably went to Dochstader. In 1800 when the lands are transferred Lot 24, Concession 3, Walpole goes to Christian Keller, the father in law of Abraham Hoover. There was a letter dated November 21, 1815, Manchester Township from Christian Keller to his daughterman and daughter. This letter was also filed with Jacob Hoover's Will, and on the back it says "John Hoover, Bond Due to Jacob Hoover." This would suggest that the reason Christian Keller got this land was due to the fact that he assumed John Hoover's bond. Know all Men by these Presents that I John Hoover of Manchester Township in the County of york and State of Pennsylvania Farmer am Held and firmly bound unto Jacob Hoover of the Same Township & County aforesaid in the Sum of Three Hundred bounds in real Specie of Gold or Silver Money of Pennsylvania to be paid the said Jacob Hoover or to his certain Attorney Executors, Administrators or Assigns To which pament well and truly to be made and done I Bind Self my Heirs Executors Administrators and every of them, firmly by these Presents Sealed with my Seal Dated the Seventh Day of May Anno Dominy one thousand Seven Hundred Ninety too. | 5544 | Wide disparity in estimated date of birth between Davis at www.mennosearch.com and Regina Sherk article in Jan. 2007 issue of PMH (page 26). Davis indicated birth date closer to 1725.
