| 4101 | The Powell family came from Wales, one branch still occupying the ancestral estate at Nanteos, near Aberystwith. One of the forebearers in the long history of the family was Sir Thomas, who was one of the justices who defied the wrath of King James Il in 1688 and liberated the seven bishops who refused to obey the King’s dictates in spiritual affairs. It was one of Sir Thomas' sons who went with his Puritan tutor to America thereby establishing the American branch of the family. A descendant, Abraham Powell, became a United Empire Loyalist who, after the American Revolutionary War, settled first in New Brunswick and later moved to Upper Canada, establishing a home in the Township of Windham in Norfolk County a little north of the Town of Simcoe. This settlement soon took on the name of Powell’s Plain or Buckwheat Street. Besides farming, Abraham opened a small store. | Powell, Abraham (I14918)

| 4103 | THE SINKING OF THE ERIE WAVE EIGHT LIVES LOST October 4, 1889 - TILSONBURG OBSERVER Nearly two weeks ago while the schooner "Erie Wave" owned by W. V. Emery of Port Burwell and captained by Thos. Stafford was loading off shore a little below Clear Creek, she was driven ashore in a gale. By September 30th, after ten days of work, there were some signs that progress was being made. Captain Stafford was expecting a wind and was optimistic that the "Erie Wave" could be winched off in a rising sea. Last Monday a gang of men under Capt. D. Foster of Port Burwell succeeded in getting the stranded vessel off the first sand bar, about 20 rods from shore, where they decided to leave her 'till morning. However, some time during the night the men on board decided to haul her off to her anchor, when she filled and capsized, drowning Captain Stafford, Robert Marlatt, Edward Soper, George Bell of Port Burwell and Lewis Stephens, James Stephens, Charles Crawford and Lewis Hilkey (Lewis Helka) of Clear Creek. Three men only swam ashore and were saved - Thomas Baker, Ayarish Vaughn Jr. of Port Burwell and Joseph Crawford of Clear Creek. Most of the unfortunate victims have families and it is one of the saddest affairs that have occurred in many a year in this neighbourhood. This statement appeared in a paper shortly after Lewis' death - "October 28, 1889 - Mr. Hulkey (Helka) of Clear Creek, one of the men who drowned off the 'Erie Wave' left a wife and family in rather destitute circumstances. A subscription was taken up in Port Rowan for the family and $50 was raised. One of the sportsmen of the Point sent over twenty dollars." From: MEMORIES A History of Port Burwell By Frank and Nancy Prothero ERIE WAVE One of the best known vessels to be built at Port Burwell earned a reputation on the Great Lakes as a jinx ship. Tragedy followed the ERIE WAVE throughout her short career. Hymenas Haskins, of Port Burwell, had always wanted to own the fastest schooner on the lakes. By 1881 the best of the schooner days were over and steam was rapidly replacing sail on the Great Lakes. The Port Burwell ship yards, which had once resounded to the pounding and sawing of dozens of ships carpenters, had now fallen quiet. Hymenas was no longer a young man and in the fall of 1881 he decided to make his dream come true. He commissioned a large schooner to be built, one of the largest ever constructed in the port, 160 feet on the keel. During the winter of 1881-82, the vessel took shape on the banks of the Otter Creek. She was, however, very different from the schooners that had been built her for decades. She was very narrow and her masts were much too high for her narrow beam. Friends and neighbours shook their heads in disbelief and warned that she would be a dangerous vessel, but Mr. Haskins persisted. The ERIE WAVE made her maiden voyage in 1882, carrying a cargo of elm bolts to Buffalo. On the face of it, it appeared that Hymenas Haskins was right all along, for the trip was made in record time. Complaints were heard from those who sailed her. They said she was too tender and only quick action by the crew saved her from being capsized. She was already earning a reputation. Fearful that her critics might be right, Hymenas sold her to Youell and Emery. The firm of Youell and Emery, shipbuilders, millers and merchants placed the ERIE WAVE under the command of Captain Thomas Stafford. Under his command several trips were made to Lake Huron and Lake Ontario as well as on Lake Erie but her reputation with the community of working sailors did not improve. In 1885, James MacPherson joined the roster of the ERIE WAVE at Port Burwell. His mother was the cook and he signed on as the schooner left Port Burwell for Buffalo. MacPherson completed the voyage but asked to be paid off in Buffalo. She was much too tricky a vessel for him, he explained. He also tried to persuade his mother to leave the ERIE WAVE but she elected to stay aboard. A few days later, a large schooner rounding Long Point in a gale, came across a vessel upside down in the water, with three men clinging to her. A rescue was soon effected and it was learned that the capsized schooner was the ERIE WAVE. Her cook and an unnamed crew member were lost. The ERIE WAVE was righted and pumped out. After some minor repairs, she was put back into service. In September of 1889, the ERIE WAVE was off Clear Creek when a gale blew her in on the beach, grounding her on the clay bottom. Getting her off was going to be no easy task, and Captain Stafford hired an extra crew to help with the work. He ballast was removed and some repairs were made to her hull. Her anchors were taken out into deep water and firmly hooked on the bottom so she could be kedged off, and a crew was kept busy at the pumps. By September 30th, after ten days of work, there were some signs that progress was being made. Captain Stafford was expecting a wind and was optimistic that the ERIE WAVE could be winched off with her own windlass in the rising surf. Charlie Crawford was one of the Clear Creek boys that had been hired to help free the grounded schooner. His sixteen year old brother, Joe, came along to visit but stayed to help as the wind began to freshen out of the south. As predicted, the waves began to lift the ERIE WAVE and she moved into deeper water. The crew was immediately ordered to set sail. As she moved forward, the big schooner pitched violently. The pumps had been abandoned in order to raise sail and water was pouring in her split seams. Her movement forward was too rapid to allow the ground tackle to be lifted and somewhere off shore she tripped, fell off into the trough and capsized. In the darkness and confusion the crew shouted to each other as they clung to the rigging and pieces of wreckage. Azariah Vaughn, of Port Burwell, decided to strike out for shore and bring help. He didn't know how far out they were but he calculated that it was less than a mile. He was a young man and a good swimmer and felt this might be the only chance the men on the ERIE WAVE had to survive. His swim to shore was a long and exhausting one and once there he was confronted with the steep clay banks. After pulling himself above the pounding surf, he had to rest for half an hour before he was in any condition to reach higher ground. Meanwhile Joe Crawford and Tom Baker had also come ashore. The residents were aroused and lamps were lit to be carried along the brow of the cliffs by those who kept an anxious vigil throughout the night. There was no harbour at Clear Creek, and it was impossible to launch a boat in the pounding surf. A rider was sent to Port Rowan to summon help. When dawn arrived the twisted and broken wreckage of the ERIE WAVE could be seen about a half mile off shore. Waves continued the destruction that had begun the night before. Not a living soul was to be found. In all, the ERIE WAVE claimed eight victims that night. Captain Tom Stafford left a wife and three children at Port Burwell. Captain George Bell, of Port Dover, who sailed as mate was also lost. Edward Soper of Vienna and Robert Marlatt of Port Burwell lost their lives. Charlie Crawford, Jim Stevens, Len Stevens and Lew Pelky [Helkey], representing much of the younger generation of the little village of Clear Creek were also victims of the ill-fated ERIE WAVE. Azariah "Ki" Vaughn returned to Port Burwell. In later years, after the schooner days were long gone, his sons entered the fishing industry and became known all along the north shore of Lake Erie. He never forgot the tragic voyage that ended the short career of the ERIE WAVE. The news of the tragedy of the ERIE WAVE spread quickly along the north shore to Port Burwell and was the topic of conversation in many homes where the loss was deeply felt. In hemlock, just east of Port Burwell, Mrs. Peter Mercer's 13 year old son asked, "Who will pay the cost of all the wreck?" Mrs. Mercer was a teacher and she penned the following reply to her son. Hark! What mean these awful tidings? ERIE WAVE was wrecked last night, Wrecked, My God? and eight men have perished, Never more to see the light. Loving fathers, sons and brothers, Tender husbands, all were lost, Who can estimate their value? Who can calculate the cost? Friends and neighbours vainly searching For those bodies since the storm, Little brothers, hot tears streaming, Looking for their loved one's form. Grieving fathers, mourning mothers, Some with hair like winter's frost, Many hearts are bleeding for you, But they cannot count the cost. But remember in your sorrow, He who walked upon the Sea, He hath said in every trouble, "I will surely comfort thee." Wives and mothers, do not weep so For the loved ones tempest tossed, Look to Jesus, he can help you, He can sum up all the cost. He will gather up those bodies, Though you never see them more, He will keep His eye upon them, Though they toss from shore to shore Though their dust may strew the lakebed, Not one atom will be lost, For he knoweth all their value, Yes, and He can pay the cost. Who can tell what prayers were offered Clinging to that stranded ship? When death stiffened tongue and lip? He who prayed for those who pierced Him Saved the thief upon the cross He will hear all cries of mercy For he died to pay the cost. A NIGHT OF TERROR - Aylmer Sun Wreck of the "Erie Wave" as related to the "Aylmer Sun' by survivor Joe CRAWFORD Clear Creek October 12, 1889 I was on board the Erie Wave when she capsized. The night was intensely dark and chilly, a heavy gale had sprung up and the waves raged furiously, rocking the schooner to and fro so violently that all on board became terribly sea-sick. About midnight the storm grew worse and the captain said to Bell & Soper, "I will out the cable and let her go on shore." They answered, "No let her ride it out." Scarcely had the words left their lips when she capsized. Being pretty full of water, for the pump had refused to work all night, she failed to right herself and lay rocking on her side, the heavy billows rocking over her until her spar went out. I expected every minute to receive a death blow, as I struggled in the darkness and chilling waves to secure a clinging position. After I had succeeded I asked the captain if all were on board. He shouted back he was. I asked "Is Charlie there?" He replied that he was just ahead of him. Just then I heard a cry for help beneath. It came from Geo. Bell who was suffering from rheumetism and unable to help himself. I aided him to a secure position and was about to go to help my brother when a wave swept me off. Fearing being struck or rocked under if I returned to the schooner, I resolved to make to shore. Then came a struggle which no words can describe. Only those who have had a similar experience know how much the mind is capable of thinking, the heart feeling and the body of enduring in a watery combat. Nerved with energy that desperation gives and buoyed by the hope of saving my brother and comrades, struggled fiercely in the raging waves. My heavy overcoat and woolen clothing burdened me, but I dared not pause a moment to strip. Over and under the water swimming in every imaginable way to save strength I at last began to get near shore. Even then had mine been the only life at stake, I would have gone down. Every nerve and muscle was straining to the utmost to resist the angry waves thar receded from the clay cliffs. Several times I almost succumed, but a strong determination got me ashore. There a precipitous clay cliff met me which I began to climb by digging one hole after another with my feet. I had almost reached the top when exhaustion overcame me and I fell back some 15 feet and laid a moment stunned. A cry for help reached me from the perishing ones and seemed to give me supernatural strength for immediately I scaled the cliff that I could not have climbed in daylight. Then I climbed up another gentle slope and met another steep projection from which I again reeled and fell another few feet. Making a mighty effort I again gained the lane. In my eagerness to find a dwelling I took no precautions and in the darkness violently ran into a fence, knocking me almost senseless. Rallying, however, I followed the fence and soon reached Daniel Moore's residence. No time was lost in spreading the news. Light soon came, the lifeboat was sent for, but all was in vain, for nothing dared face the turbulent seas. When morning dawned, it was plain to see that none were aboard. My brothers, brother-in-law and myself immediately began to search for the bodies. We searched the beach day and night until we recovered six; deep grief wringing our hearts, as one by one we lifted them from their watery grave. | 4109 | This information comes courtesy of Jan Warren Theisen, a descendant of Joel Glover and Huldah Gooden. Joel Glover is buried in an unmarked grave in Forest Lawn Cemetery, City of Saginaw, Grave No. 774, 9th Row, Section 16. The following is from newspaper articles at the time of his murder, and best describes the circumstances of the crime. Joel was murdered in 1915 and was the subject of many fond reminiscences of his cousin Jess Weaver who died in 1936. SAGINAW DAILY NEWS, February 2, 1915 MAJOR, PLEADING GUILTY TO MURDER, SENT UP FOR LIFE Slayer of Joel Glover Attempts No Defense When Arraigned Before Judge Gage and is Quickly Sentenced to Marquette Prison for Crime. DOES NOT BREAK DOWN UNDER SEVERE ORDEAL Weeps as He is Being Taken Back to Jail From Court Room and Expresses Sorrow for What He Has Done - Preliminaries of Law Quickly Followed in His Case - Confesses to Crime While En Route Back to Saginaw. "Little Mike" Major, charged with the murder of Joel Glover, arrested in Cincinnati Saturday night and brought here Monday night by Sheriff Sutherland and Deputy Turnbull, was taken before Judge Gage in the circuit court at 9:40 Tuesday morning. Previous to arraignment he was taken into the judge's private office for a conference. He admitted the crime. He was then formally arraigned and the charge reread to him. "I did it," he said. Judge Gage imposed sentence of Marquette prison for life. The former camp cook did not break down or display any emotion. On the way back to the county jail he cried a little and expressed sorrow at what he had done. The man will be taken away probably Tuesday night. ALSO IN JUSTICE COURT Previous to his appearance in the circuit court Major was arraigned in Justice McDonald's court and the formal charge first degree murder was read to him by Prosecuting Attorney Vincent. The Roumanian waited patiently until the charge was finished and cried out, "I'm guilty." Justice McDonald asked him if he desired to waive examination and be held to the circuit court and have the matter over with as soon as possible. He replied that that was what he wanted. There were few people in the little Buena Vista township court room. The Roumanian showed by speech and action just how he killed Glover. It was an impressive scene. Major was then held to the circuit court without bail and was returned to the county jail in custody of Sheriff Sutherland. DOES NOT BREAK DOWN Sheriff Sutherland took the News representative into the rear cell block of the county jail at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning. The officer rushed back an iron slot and Mike Major's face peered through the four by six hole in the steel door. The Roumanian wanted to shake hands. He showed no reticence about telling of the crime. One feature of the murder that has been a source of persistent inquiry is why Major wanted the money. He had a girl in Cincinnati and when he got the money and arrived in the Ohio metropolis he found she had been married five weeks. He didn't get to talk to her. He was on the second floor of the building where she lives and saw her, but she didn't see him. "I was born in Roumania and have a father and one brother and two sisters living," he said. "I am 23 years old and came to this country six years ago." The murderer's talk was in fairly good English, but broken here and there. "I have always spent my winters in Cincinnati, but worked in the summer time," he continued. "Three years I was in Cincinnati. Then I was in Detroit and Chesaning. I have been in Chesaning or near there for three years with the exception of the winters. While there I worked for J. Miller, Sam Reid, Albert Smithell, a man named Fitzpatrick and on the Prairie farm for two months." "SORRY I KILLED OLD MAN" "I'm sorry I killed old man Glover. You know, I liked that man. He was a good fellow. He played the violin for us and he was all right. I wouldn't do it again." Major told this several times. "I stayed in Chesaning Saturday night," the prisoner said. "Sunday morning went on the train to Swan Creek, walked across the fields and through the woods to the lumber camp and found the old man (Glover) in the bunk shanty. He was nice to me, said 'Good morning,' and talked awhile. Then he left the shanty and went to the stable to feed the horses. As soon as he was gone I took off my overcoat and my other coat, hung them up, picked up an ax and followed him. "I saw him in the hay part of the barn and stepped in behind him. His back was turned when I struck at him the first time. The axe glanced off his head and he whirled around just as I raised the axe again. When he saw me he yelled, 'Don't hit me Mike,' but I swung at him again and when he dodged back the axe hit him on the leg. Then I said, 'Give me your money,' and he threw his pocket book toward me. It fell on the hay. I didn't stop to pick it up, but ran at him and hit him over the head with the axe and pounded him down in the manger. "When I was sure he was dead I picked up the pocketbook, dropped my axe on the hay, took my coat and ran. I had $2 when I killed him." FIRST CLUE TO MURDERER From the actual time of the crime which Major says was between 9:30 and 9:45 Sunday morning, he ran and walked from the camp. This was the first clue as to who the murderer was. Joseph Barber, one of the woodsmen, saw a man answering his description running a few steps and then walking away from the camp that Sunday morning. The fellow looked to Barber to be Major. Sheriff Sutherland was given this clue and worked assiduously on the case from that point. Within four days he had the man under arrest in Cincinnati and nine days after the crime was committed the murderer was under life sentence to Marquette prison. From the Haney camp Major ran and walked along the railroad track to St. Charles where he hired a rig and drove to the Prairie farm to see a friend. The sheriff who secured the information that Major visited the prarie farm soon after the murder and putting the two together the case looked stronger against him. Major had worked at the prarie farm, had friends there and if he was going to clear out of the country it was natural he would make a visit. He secured the address of a friend in Milwaukee, drove back to St. Charles and then wrote a letter to Milwaukee. He next boarded a Michigan Central train for Jackson, paying his fare as far as Owosso and from that point paying cash again to destination. From Jackson he rode 30 miles on a freight and from then on took passenger trains for Cincinnati, reaching there Monday night and going to 1418 Central avenue, where he was arrested Saturday night. NO EMOTION WHEN ARRESTED Sheriff Southerland heard that Major had sold a pair of shoes a few days before the murder and this showed he was in need of money. The fact that he had a girl in Cincinnati was another clue that made the officers watch him. Sheriff Southerland and Deputy Turnbull were highly complimented by Prosecutor Vincent and others Tuesday. The fact that the detection, arrest and conviction of the murderer have been accomplished without any expense to the county except the trip to Cincinnati means a saving of a large amount of money to the county in running down clues, witness fees and other matters connected with taking cases into court. Major showed no emotion when he was arrested in Cincinnati and maintained a stoical indifference to the charge on which he was arrested when he was taken in charge by Sheriff Sutherland. Cincinnati officers co-operated in every way with the Saginaw authorities. Sheriff Southerland and Deputy Turnbull reached Detroit early Monday evening. FIRST SIGN OF WEAKENING As they were waiting for the train to Saginaw Major whispered to the sheriff, "wait till we get alone. I'll tell you." A few miles out from Detroit the Roumanian unburdened himself and told the story in detail. The Michigan Central train did not arrive until midnight. Prosecutor Vincent was at the train and accompanied the sheriff and Deputy Turnbull to the county jail where Major repeated his confession. It was the same story he told the sheriff earlier in the evening. Major is a quiet mild mannered fellow, when seen Tuesday did not seem to realize the nature of the crime he had committed. Occasionally he would say he was sorry and offered to sob but showed no mental anguish at his fate, Sheriff Southerland brought home with him a copy of a Cincinnati paper containing a story that Major was arrested several years ago. A woman had deserted her husband and was about to flee with Major. The plan was nipped in the bud. Andy George, the Slav, who had been held as a possible witness was given his liberty Tuesday. From An Earlier Article in the SAGINAW DAILY NEWS: NO LIGHT THROWN ON GLOVER DEATH Coroners Jury fails to bring out further developments MORE NAMES BROUGHT INTO CASE Authorities seeking for two men to ascertain if they know anything about the Swan Creek tragedy. No attempt to fix responsibility for the murder of Joel Glover, the aged man found dead in a stable at the lumber camp in Swan Creek township Monday, was made by the coroner's jury probing the case and which continued its work Wednesday afternoon. The verdict was as follows. Joel Glover came to his death by being murdered. As far as known, sometime Sunday January 24, 1915, near midday, in the stable at the James O. Haney lumber camp on the Albright estate in Swan Creek township, Saginaw County, death being caused by blows on the head and right leg from an axe in the hands of an unknown person. The testimony brought out the fact that two other men who worked at the camp had not been seen for several days, and thus added to the interest in the case, leading the sheriff to begin an investigation as to their whereabouts in order that they may be found and questioned. One of these men is named "Little Mike Major, the other a German whose name no one seemed to know, but whose home it is said is or was Marion, Mich. Whether these men can shed any light on the tragedy will only be developed when they are found and interrogated. NO INCRIMINATING EVIDENCE Andy George the Slav fellow workman with Glover, who has been held since the morning the body was found, figured in the stories of different witnesses, but evidence did not tend to incriminate him. "Little Mike" Major worked as a dishwasher and handy man about the Haney camp up to Friday noon, when he quit. At that time Mr. Haney paid off all of his men. "Little Mike" being about the camp until Saturday afternoon. He went to Chesaning with Mr. Haney and son Ray and was seen in Kain brothers pool room as late as 11 O'clock that night. The German it seems, lived with Glover just before Andy George did and from the stories brought out it appears that Glover and the man who is said to be about 45 years old quarreled and the German left, just before departure he was refused a loan of money by Glover. That was before Christmas. Except for brief intervals he has not been in Saginaw County as far as known, but Saturday afternoon, as Mr. Haney was walking out of the Camp to take the train in Chesaning to spend Sunday, he was surprised to see the German walking along the road. Since then the man has not been seen. Then he returned to the camp and found it was Glover that was dead. Ten minutes later George cried it's him he's dead.Arthur Banting and Ward Parkins were other witnesses but they went to work Monday morning and didn't know much about the case. Prosecutor Vincent made a statement to the coroner's jury in which he said the crime was one of the most brutal ever committed in Michigan and that his department and the Sheriff would do everything in their power to solve the mystery. He recentley celebrated his 80th birthday, although he was physically not very well. Michael was the founding Chair of the English Department at Brock University in 1964. He came with Dr. Gibson from Ottawa. He was a very popular lecturer at Brock, known for his participation in freshman seminars, having students in his home at "Porch Club" meetings. Also, he was a Rhodes scholar, a frequent speaker from out pulpit, and a published poet. He will be missed by his many friends and admirers, and we hasten to send our condolences to his widow, children, grandchildren and great grandchild. Michael Sands Hornyansky was the son of Nicholas Hornyansky, a well-known painter in Montreal and his mother was a cellist. He graduated with first class honours from all the educational institutions that he attended: Oakwood Collegiate, Oxford where he was a Rhodes scholar and won the Newdigate prize for poetry in 1951. He taught English Language and Literature in Carleton University in Ottawa for 10 years. He moved to Niagara in 1964 where he was the founding chairman of the English Department at Brock University. | 4143 | Warner, Seth (1743-1784) Revolutionary militia and army officer. Born in Woodbury, Connecticut, Seth Warner moved to the New Hampshire Grants (now Vermont) in 1763. Along with Ethan Allen he became a leader in the "Green Mountain Boys." From Virtual Vermont Internet Magazine - American Revolutionary soldier, born in Roxbury, Connecticut. He came to Bennington in 1765, a skilled botanist (despite only a common-school education) and ardent huntsman. The lifestyle suited him, and these pursuits won out over farming. He was elected Captain of the local regiment of the Green Mountain Boys, formed to resist New York authority over Vermont. Though he lived outside the settlement of Bennington only a mile from the New York line, the Yorkers never succeeded in capturing him despite numerous indictments and generous rewards offered. His bravery and military capacity were highly respected in the Continental army. During the 1775 invasion of Canada, the 300 men under Warner's command repulsed Carlton's force of 800 when they tried to join McLean to break the siege of Montreal. In July, 1777, as the Constitutional meeting was being held in Windsor, Warner was ordered to abandon Ticonderoga and commanded the rear guard which fought a splendid, well-planned battle at Hubbardton, and which nearly won the battle had British reinforcements not arrived. Warner aided John Stark in planning the Battle of Bennington and participated gallantly. Later, at Lake George Landing, he captured the vessels in which General Burgoyne would have escaped. Never much of a businessman, he did not participate in the land speculation which made many of the early Vermont leaders wealthy. The proprietors of several towns voted him land as a reward for his services, but most of that property went to pay taxes; he never benefitted from it. Neglect of his affairs during his military career so depleted his resources that, as he neared death, his wife was forced to apply to Congress for charity, though it was hardly in a position at the time to grant anything. Some four years after Seth's death (no explanation for the delay), the Legislature gave Hester just under 2,000 acres in the northeast corner of the state, now known as Warners Grant. It is not believed she ever occupied it, and today it remains unoccupied. He returned to Roxbury in 1784, and died on December 26. Long bed-ridden, he was gripped by fits of insanity before he died. | Warner, Seth (I03422)
