Probably not the right John Backus, I'm afraid, but too good to throw out!
The Newtown NY Register - Thursday April 11, 1887
Sarah E. Backus, of 136 North First street, and her husband, John Backus, have been divorced by the City Court after five years of unhappy married life. Among the many cruel acts alleged of the husband were throwing beer glasses at her; sundry kicks about the body; threats to kill with a revolver, and throwing burning oil on the bed in which she was sleeping.
