Many thousands of Pilgrims on the long way from Germany to the shrine of St. James in Spain (Santiago Matamoros) tramped through Zürich during the Middle Ages. A significant shortcut allowed them to walk on a boaardwalk across Lake Zürich to the community of Einsiedeln, and from there through Freiburg to France.
