| 702 | From Hoover Ancestors, Page 12: Jacob Hoober was on the 1718 Conestoga, Lancaster County assessment list. Page 18: Jacob Hoober was listed among "Dutch Inhabitants" of Conestoga, Lancaster County in 1718. After Jacob's death his wife Barbara was known as "Widow Hoober" The following is an excerpt from an Instrument for the sale of property from Martin Kundig and Hans Heer to Hans Boyer. The First Byerland Church would be built on this land in 1748 (still standing at a different location). The land Hans Boyer purchased bordered on "ULRICH HOOBER'S" land and "THE WIDOW HOOBER'S" land. - Bearing date the Twenty second day of November in the year of our Lord 1717 the quantity of five thousand Acres of Land was granted to be surveyed unto Martin Kundig and Hans Heer among the Surveys then made on Conestogo and Pequea Creeks in the County now called Lancaster. In pursuance of which said Warrant there was Surveyed in part of the quantity therein mentioned on the Tenth day of May Anno 1719 a certain Tract of Land within the said County Beginning at a white Oak by the said Pequea Creek at a corner of John Farrer's Land and extending thence by the same North North East fifteen perches to a Post and South by East thirty six perches to a Post and North North East eighty perches to a Post and North seventy eight degrees East forty perches to a black Oak thence by ULRICH HOOBER'S land South East by East eighty perches to a Hickery tree thence by WIDOW HOOBER'S Land South Sixty perches to a post South Six degrees. East thirty two perches to a Post and South three degrees East two hundred and one perches to a Post thence by vacant Land, West by North Sixty five perches to a White oak and South by East twenty eight perches to a Post by the aforesaid Creek thence up by the same on several Courses two hundred and eighty perches to the place of Beginning containing two hundred and ten Acres and the Allowance of Six Acres on each hundred for Roads and Highways as in and by the Survey thereof remaining in our Surveyor General's Office and from thence certified into our Secretary's Office may appear. And Whereas in and by one Deed poll bearing date the twentieth day of October Anno 1736 for the consideration therein mentioned the said Martin Kundigg and Hans Heer did Bargain and Sell all their Right and claim of and in the Same Tract of Land unto Hans Boyer of the County Aforesaid. From Hoover Heritage Commemorative Calendar December 2006 ANTIQUE HOOVER CHEST "Built in Germany, 1688" According to oral tradition and a penciled inscription, this chest was built by/for the Hoovers in Germany in 1688. The Hoover/Hubers were German-speaking Mennonites from Switzerland who were persecuted for their Anabaptist religious beliefs. In 1688 the armies of Louis XIV of France invaded and destroyed the Palatinate, a German State in which the Swiss Mennonites had sought refuge. The Hubers may have moved further north in 1688 to escape the brief war, or moved from Switzerland into the Palatine later that year to work on reconstruction. Eventually the Mennonites were driven out of the Palatine as well and moved north into Holland, the only religious refuge in Europe. There the various Anabaptist sects were recruited by William Penn's agents to settle his new American colony, Pennsylvania. The Patriarch of the Huber/Hoovers in Canada was Jakob Huber (1728-1810) who was born in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, son of Hans "Ulrich" Huber. Apparently the chest was built by/for Jakob Huber's ancestors some three decades before the family emigrated from Holland to Pennsylvania in 1717. The chest was donated to Cottonwood Mansion by the family of Hoover descendant Alice Elizabeth "Allie" (Hamilton) Demorest, and it remains there on permanent display. | Huber, Jacob (I00008)

| 704 | From Hoover Heritage Commemorative Calendar August 2006 SALVATION ARMY~BENJAMIN HOOVER HOUSE This picture taken in the spring of 1939 shows a young Lloyd Drehmer being held by his great, great uncle Benjamin Hoover Jr. Benjamin's son Lloyd Benjamin Hoover would be the last Hoover owner of the property. This farm was established by Isaac Hoover, son of David and grandson of Jacob. The present house was built of poured concrete about 1916 by Benjamin Hoover Jr., a nephew of Isaac. The poured concrete verandas exhibit excellent proportions and craftsmanship in a very unusual material. The house is a typical Mennonite bank-house. The walkout basement contains a spring which runs through a long concrete sink. Another feature of the house is a poured concrete fireplace made using a steam engine wheel as a form. On April 6, 1948 Lloyd Benjamin Hoover sold the property to the Governing Council of the Salvation Army, Canada East, who have used it as a summer camp ever since. This lot, Lot 3, Concession 1, Rainham has the first recorded inhabitant after the surveys were ordered made by Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe. In 1794 Henry Stoffles reported to have been living here for three years with a wife and daughter and eight acres cleared. Stoffles seems to have disappeared and the land would become a Crown Reserve until it was granted to Thomas Hampton in 1809. | Hoover, Benjamin (I01046)

| 744 | From John Cardiff's Nornet - The Late John Murphy Esq. As briefly announced in last week's Reformer, Mr. John Murphy, one of the best-known residents for Norfolk, passed away at his home in North Walsingham on Saturday, 23rd May ult. Deceased was born in the County of Kerry, Ireland, 13th Nov., 1842. His father, Patrick Murphy, came to Canada in March of that year, Mrs. Murphy following with her two oldest sons, Timothy and John, in 1843. The family settled in North Walsingham on the farm occupied by Mr. John Murphy at the time of his decease. It was here he grew from infancy to manhood. In early life he engaged in lumbering. From 1861 to 1872 he was foreman-manager for Evans-Killmaster & Co. In 1867 he married Elizabeth Elsie Forbes, a native of Inverness, Hamfshire, Scotland. In the latter part of her life Mrs. Murphy was an invalid, but bore her suffering with Christian piety and submission to the will of God. She passed away in January, 1911. Mr. Murphy was throughout his whole life a man of many activities, interested in every movement for the advancement of the community and county in which he lived. He was connected with the Norfolk Farmers' Insurance Company from its inception, was eight years its president, and for twenty years on the board of directors. He served for a great many years on the board of the County Fair and was president of the society for a period. He was also prominent in Farmers' Institute work. He was justice of the peace for thirty years, an issuer of marriage licenses for twenty years, and secretary-treasurer and school trustee for thirty-seven years. In politics he was a Liberal. He was a delegate from the county to the great Liberal convention at Ottawa in 1896. He was vice-president of the Liberal Association of South Norfolk for a lengthy term, always a delegate to conventions, and often spoken of as a candidate. He was several times a councillor in North Walsingham. In religion Mr. Murphy was a Roman Catholic, but, while loyal to his own views, he was ever tolerant of the views of others, and was always ready to lend a helping hand to members of all other communions. The illness which finally terminated fatally was most prolonged attacking him ten years ago and incapacitating him from work. His slowly-ebbing strength was watched and his some-time sufferings borne with a calm fortitude and a beautiful trust in the surety of the Eternal. During his long illness he was cared for by his daughter, Annie, a graduate of St. Joseph's Hospital, London. Besides Miss Annie, there are left to mourn his loss five sons and another daughter. They are: Margaret, wife of Mr. John J. Tighe, of Barons, Alberta; John H. J., with the Royal-Crown Co., Winnipeg; William, with the Knights of Columbus, Winnipeg; Leslie, with the Pauline Co., Winnipeg; Edwin E. and Francis, at home. There are also two brothers, Jerry, of Ingersoll, and James, of Simcoe, and Mrs. McCarty, a sister, residing in London. The five sons were at his bedside when he closed his eyes in their last sleep. All seven children respected and appreciated their father, for it had been his one aim to bring them up useful, God-fearing citizens, and every necessary sacrifice had been made to fit them for positions of trust and responsibility. It is upon the lives and work of such men as John Murphy that Canada's future is to be built. He has gone to his grave with the respect of all who knew him. May mother earth lie lightly on him. | Murphy, John (I20480)
