| 5309 | NEWS NORFOLK & REGION Murderer's upbringing couldn't save him CHERYL MACDONALD Tuesday, March 9, 2010 In May 1915, Emerson Shelley killed Christian Shoup while he worked on his South Walsingham farm. Shoup was 57, a prosperous miller and farmer. A kind-hearted individual, he did not drink, and was well-liked in the community. His murderer had nothing against him either. Emerson Shelley's sole motive for shooting Christian Shoup was robbery. Shelley was still in his teens but had been in trouble most of his life. He stole chickens, bicycles, produce, and a gun, and set fire to a barn. In 1909 he was suspected of shooting an elderly farmer but was acquitted. At the time of the murder, he was wanted in Woodstock for the seduction of a young girl. Shelley was apparently planning to leave Norfolk County for a while and needed money to do so. He decided the best way to get what he needed was to steal it. He targeted Christian Shoup because it was well known that Shoup usually had a quantity of cash in the house and often carried large sums on his person. He accosted Shoup as the farmer was bent down in his field, telling him to hand over his money or he would shoot him. Instead of cooperating, Shoup charged at Shelley, who shot him in the right cheek with a nickel-plated .32 revolver. The bullet severed two arteries, scraped his spine and entered his lung. Within minutes, Christian Shoup was dead and Emerson Shelley was walking away from the crime scene with his cash. The police soon turned up stories of how Shelley had tried to get some of his cronies to rob Shoup with him. He had also boasted that he would just as soon kill a man as a dog. It did not take long to build a case against him. In September, Emerson Shelley was tried for the murder of Christian Shoup. It took the jury just one hour and 20 minutes to convict him. And, in spite of his youth, there was no recommendation for mercy. He was sentenced to hang. While Shelley awaited trial there had been considerable discussion of his criminal record and the unwholesome atmosphere in which he was brought up. Despite the horror of a premeditated murder that had ended the life of a respectable citizen, there was a certain amount of sympathy for Shelley. On Sept. 30, soon after the trial ended, the Reformer discussed the issue in an editorial. "If the hanging of Shelley would restore inoffensive Christian Shoup to his family there could not remain a lingering doubt in the mind of anyone that to the gallows he should go," it began, then pointed out that Shelley was certainly guilty and had been given a fair trial. In addition, the editor was normally in favour of capital punishment. However, he argued, there were other considerations. "What has society to say to its share in his guilt? Who largely made him what he has become? Will his execution wipe out the responsibility of Norfolk County for the appalling environment in which he has been reared? To whose door is to be laid the blame for his utter lack of moral and educational training? ... The Reformer is of the opinion that the ends of justice would be better served if a death sentence upon Emerson Shelley were commuted to one of imprisonment in Kingston penitentiary for life." The Reformer was not alone in its opinion. There were others who supported commutation, but the authorities did not. Shortly after 8 a.m. on Dec. 23, 1915, Emerson Shelley was executed in the Norfolk County Jail. Cheryl MacDonald is an author and historian. Her column appears each week in the Times-Reformer. | 5327 | Notes from George Shank's research: This is all of the information that I have on Ulrich. Please note that under religion I list him as Anabaptist/Mennonite. The Catholic church referred to the people that had broken away as Anabaptists. This was because they did not believe in child baptism, but rather that people should be baptized as an adult. Individual groups of these people often referred to themselves by their leader's name. Such would be the case with Peter Waldo of Holland. He separated from the church is 1160 and his followers became known as Waldenses. In 1536 Menno Simon, also of Holland, became the leader of a branch of dissenters, mostly Dutch and Swiss, and they became known as Mennonites. Of course, the largest and possibly the best known of these groups is the Lutherans that followed Martin Luther. I refer to Ulrich, his son Michael Sr., and grandson Michael Jr. as Anabaptist/Mennonite. After we came to America, starting with Christian b1588, I use the term Mennonite for religious affiliation. This will hold true up through Christian b1662. After that I am not always sure of a person's particular religious affiliation. It must be understood that once we started moving around in America that the chances of moving to an area that had your particular religion were slimmer and slimmer. This would be especially true if you moved as an individual family instead of as a group of families whether related or not. A group of families could simply start their own church and continue their religious practices. The individual family usually attended what ever church was in the area that they moved to. This is why you will find your family name associated with almost any mainline church in the country. Yes, this would include Catholic, the very group that we broke away from. | Schenk, Ulrich (I00307)

| 5329 | Obituary of Elva Johnson Hoover, 97, passed away on Friday, October 27, 2017. Mrs. Hoover was born November 23,1919, in Hughes County, Oklahoma, and grew up in Coffeyville, Kansas. From early childhood she felt God?s call to the ministry, and trained at Southwestern Bible School. Upon graduation in 1941 she went as a home missionary to the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky where she served for five years. Ordained to the ministry in 1945, she became pastor of the Assemblies of God church in Earlington, KY. She later served the church in Brooten, MN. She was also a freelance writer, and in 1950 was invited to the Assemblies of God headquarters in Springfield, MO, to write curricular materials for Sunday school teachers and stories for various age levels. She was later asked to write promotional materials, including a book, for the denomination?s Home Missions and Benevolences Departments. Her writing caught the attention of the editor of the Pentecostal Evangel who invited her to serve as editorial assistant for the weekly periodical. In 1960 she became national representative for the Women?s Ministries Department. In that capacity she edited a quarterly leadership magazine and traveled as a speaker in district women?s retreats and other functions. In 1963 she married Mario G. Hoover and adopted his three sons, ages 7, 10, and 12. She took leave from her work for five years in order to make a home for the children. During this time she took freelance assignments from various headquarters departments. She returned to the Assemblies of God headquarters in 1968 to serve as Public Relations Assistant for the denomination. She later was appointed Special Assignment Editor in the Church School Literature Department. There she developed Vacation Bible School materials and started a magazine for Children?s Church leaders.
