THE EDSALL HOMESTEAD

The Edsall homestead at Edsall Park, Peacock Point, Lot 16, Concession 1, Township of Walpole, is a century farm on Lake Erie and displays the century farm sign issused by the Ontario Government in this "Canada's centennial year." The signs are issued only to direct descendants of the owners of the farms a century ago.

This century old home has housed the fifth generation of the Edsall family, and is now occupied by William Charles Edsall and his wife and 19 year old daughter, Beverley.

This was the only frame house in the area when it was built. All others were log houses which ceased to exist long ago. It was built with hand hewn timbers from the virgin pines that had to be cut to clear the land at that time. The walls were sheeted with pine plank 2 inches thick and from one to two feet in width. The timbers are hewn smoother and straighter than sawn timbers from the mill today. The house was well built and still stands erect. It is still in good condition. Modern conveniences and hardwood floors have been installed but care has been taken not to erase its antiquity.

The wagon trails and horse and buggy days have given place to paved highways and modern automobiles. Modern machinery does the farming but the old cradle that was once used to harvest the crops still hangs up at the farm unused. No one would work like that now. The old spinning wheel and the old oxen yoke have also been long unused.

The Edsalls first came to Canada at the time of the American Revolution. They were U. E. Loyalist and owned 200 aces of land where the city of Buffalo now stands. There was no bridge at that time. They floated their belongings across the river on rafts where Fort Erie is now. They established residence in Bertie township. Later on William Edsall better known at that time as "Major" came to Walpole. On April 10, 1846 he married Lucina Lamb of Lambs' Corners. He built the Edsall home at Peacock Point where he and Lucina raised their family of 5 girls and 4 boys. The girls by their married names were: Catherine Johnson, Jane Webb, Lucina Evans, Elizabeth Shaw, Caroline Lindsay. The boys were; Charles, Peter, Edward, William. The only one of the boys to marry was William, who married Margaret Wicher of Caledonia, daughter of John Wicher. Her mother was a Walker of the Sir Edmund Walker Family. He had been a professor of the Toronto University and also President of the Canadian Bank of Commerce in his time. Her father, John Wicher was well known in Mission Circles. He contributed large sums of money to that cause. He also contributed money to build the one wing of the Woodstock Hospital where the plaque bearing his name still hangs on the wall.

The McGaw School where the present William C. Edsall attended school in his boyhood has been made the Wilson McDonald memorial school. Mr. McDonald was related to the Lambs and Edsalls. He was a well known Canadian poet.

In 1919 the first cottage lot was sold off the Edsall Farm. In 1922 the first cottage was built by William Barnes. It has continued to build up until now in 1967 it is one of the largest summer resorts in the area.

Written by - William C. Edsall in 1967

The following is presented as the most likely candidate to be Ezekiel's son William. It is doubtful that vital records can be found to substantiate this claim. No other claim to this William, has been made and the time of events are in the correct time frame.

Ezekiel Dennis Will dated Feb. 1797
Grouping son William, with daughters but leaving separate and larger bequest to his two other sons Obadiah and Nathaniel.
William Dennis b. circa 1770 Rockhill Twp Bucks Co. Pa. Married Sarah Anderson, before 1804.
Children
William Dennis b. 17 March 1804 d. 11 Dec 1851, married, Catherine Phoebe Nelles 1811-1851
Nathaniel Dennis b.? married Ann McMillan 22 Apr.1826

Dennis Block granted to Sarah Anderson (Mrs Dennis) 15 Nov 1806

Sarah, granted title of Dennis Block to son William , 1826

The inscription in german script in Daniel's bible lists his wife as Elizabeth Milerrin. The "in" is the feminine ending for surnames so we can assume her name was Miller or Milerr. The name had originally been mistakenly transcribed as Miserrin.

The pioneer Schenck/Shank/Shenk/Shenck/etc. family is well documented. Christian Schenk, grandfather of Barbara, arrived in Pennsylvania in 1717. That same year fellow Mennonite Jacob Huber arrived with his wife Barbara and sons John (age 14) and Hans Ulrich [called Ulrich] (age 11). Jacob Schenk had a daughter Barbara who married Jacob Huber of Conestoga. Her first cousin Henry Shank married Anna Huber, daughter of Ulrich Huber. The issue of Ulrich included Anna who married Henry Shank. Henry signed the 1757 administration of the estate of Ulrich (his father-in-law), as did Ulrich's sons Jakob and John, and his brother John. Ulrich Huber's son Jakob had a wife Barbara. In 1758 Henry Schenk sold 132 acres to his neice Barbara and her husband Jakob Huber. Ulrich Huber's father was the elder Jacob taxed in 1718, who died by 1722. Thus this Jacob's wife Barbara was likely the one soon called the "Widow Hoober," who was known to have a son John. There is no record of a Barbara Summers who might have been the wife of our Jakob.

Barbara Shank is the only child of Jacob Schenk, s/o Christian of Strasburg & Funk/Brechbill tract. Deed WW-300 LCCH dated 7 Jan 1758 - Barbara, only child of Jacob Schenk and husband Jacob Huber are listed as heirs of Christian Schenk who released the Funk/Brechbill/Shank tract to son Henry Schenk. The Hubers sign in German, Henry Shenk in English.

Three months later, Deed L-23, LCCH, 9 Jan 1758 Henry Shank releases 132 acres of the Funk/Brechbill/Shank tract to Jacob and Barbara Shank Huber. Henry Shank to Jacob & Barbara Hoover of Strasburg, 132acres in 1758.

The Port Dover boat livery was started about 1900. Mid Thompson owned the boat livery in the 40s, he had the Sea Witch and the Johnny T and he owned thebrown cottage on the crick across from the Port Dover Fish Company where they built the first high cottage. Mid was an uncle of Jack Maytham, Minnie Thompson was Jack's mother. After Mid died Jack Maytham had the boat livery and Bunny Matthews worked for him. Bunny and Ruthie had an apartment upstairs. When Jack built the big boatworks he sold the boat livery to Bunny Matthews.
