  • Notes

    • The pioneer Schenck/Shank/Shenk/Shenck/etc. family is well documented. Christian Schenk, grandfather of Barbara, arrived in Pennsylvania in 1717. That same year fellow Mennonite Jacob Huber arrived with his wife Barbara and sons John (age 14) and Hans Ulrich [called Ulrich] (age 11). Jacob Schenk had a daughter Barbara who married Jacob Huber of Conestoga. Her first cousin Henry Shank married Anna Huber, daughter of Ulrich Huber. The issue of Ulrich included Anna who married Henry Shank. Henry signed the 1757 administration of the estate of Ulrich (his father-in-law), as did Ulrich's sons Jakob and John, and his brother John. Ulrich Huber's son Jakob had a wife Barbara. In 1758 Henry Schenk sold 132 acres to his neice Barbara and her husband Jakob Huber. Ulrich Huber's father was the elder Jacob taxed in 1718, who died by 1722. Thus this Jacob's wife Barbara was likely the one soon called the "Widow Hoober," who was known to have a son John. There is no record of a Barbara Summers who might have been the wife of our Jakob.

Barbara Shank is the only child of Jacob Schenk, s/o Christian of Strasburg & Funk/Brechbill tract. Deed WW-300 LCCH dated 7 Jan 1758 - Barbara, only child of Jacob Schenk and husband Jacob Huber are listed as heirs of Christian Schenk who released the Funk/Brechbill/Shank tract to son Henry Schenk. The Hubers sign in German, Henry Shenk in English.

Three months later, Deed L-23, LCCH, 9 Jan 1758 Henry Shank releases 132 acres of the Funk/Brechbill/Shank tract to Jacob and Barbara Shank Huber. Henry Shank to Jacob & Barbara Hoover of Strasburg, 132acres in 1758.
