CHAMBERS

In Chambers' book of the families of the German Valley, New Jersey, he quotes in part from Wing's 'History of Cumberland County' :-

Four brothers by the name of Chambers - James, Robert, Joseph and Benjamin came from Antrim County, Ireland and landed in Philadelphia about 1726. For a time the brothers lived together at the mouth of Fishing Creek on the eastern bank of the Susequehannah River, a few miles above Harris Ferry. Later, on or before the year 1730, they crossed the river and settled at different places James at the head of Green Spring near Newville, Robert at the head of Middle Spring near Shippenburg and Joseph and Benjamin at the confluence of Falling Spring and Conecocheague, where Chambersburg now stands.

After the War of the Revolution several Loyalist members of this family came to Canada and settled in Lincoln and Wentworth Counties.

JAMES CHAMBERS, described as having served with the Loyal Rangers settled on Lots 13 and 14, Concession VI, Saltfleet Township, and records would indicate that he was the oldest in this family and probably the father of the following:-

ELIJAH, who settled on Lot 2, Concession I, Saltfleet Township

ESEA, who came to Canada from New Jersey in 1787, with his wife, two sons and three daughters. No futher record.

WILLIAM, who settled on Lots 9 and 10, Concession IV, Saltfleet. His name also appears on the Assessment Roll of Grimsby Township in 1799.

JOHN, who settled on Lot 53, Concession I, Ancaster Township

JOSEPH, who settled on Lot 22, Concession I, Grimsby Township. He served in this township council in 1793, 1797 and 1798.

ISAAC, was born in 1762. He settled on Lot 23, Concessions I and II, Grimsby Township. He served on the township council in 1794, died 1805 and was buried in St. Andrew's churchyard.

NANCY, born 1786, died 1855, married James Freel of Niagara, 11 October 1806.

SARAH, who married a Myers. Her name on land of James Chambers.

Of the above members of this family we have only been able to secure the record of Elijah of Saltfleet.

ELIJAH CHAMBERS was born in 1755. He was a Sergeant in the New Jersey Volunteers during the War of the Revolution and he came to Canada with his wife, Sarah, in 1787. The farm he was granted in Saltfleet remained in the family for well over a hundred years. During the War of 1812, he served with the 5th Lincoln Regiment and in 1813 Sarah, his wife and two children died, probably of cholera, and epidemic which was prevalent in the district in that year.

After the War was over Elijah married Eleanor (McGaw) Boughner, widow of Lewis, who had been a casualty in the war. The date of the marriage was 1st January 1815.

Elijah died in 1839 and he and his wife Sarah are buried in St. Andrew's churchyard. Children:-

MARGARET, born 1796, died 1813.

JOHN, born 1799, died 1813.

ANNA, born 1802, died 1890, buried Stoney Creek.

AMOS, born 1808, died 1884, buried in St. Andrew's churchyard.

ELIZABETH CHAMBERS, who married William Pew of Saltfleet, 8 June, 1842, and JOSEPH CHAMBERS, who married Fanny Mosher, 9 May 1848, may have been children of the second marriage.

AMOS CHAMBERS inherited the home farm in Saltfleet. He married Sarah Glover of Saltfleet, 18 April 1840. Sarah was born in 1815 and died in 1866. Children:- PRISCILLA, who married Jonathan Carpenter, ADELIZA, CATHERINE, VICTORIA and GEORGE, who married Fanny Walker of Clinton Township.

Charles Gladstone Ivey probably purchased the mill about 1915. His father Joseph Ivey was a second cousin of Thomas Archibald Ivey who established the greenhouses in 1906. Their parents and grandparents had come from Cornwall, England about 1840 and settled in Walpole Township in the area between Jarvis and Varency. On the 1911 census Charles is a miller still living in Walpole, on the 1919 voter's list he C. G. Ivey, miller, R. R. 2, Port Dover; Lot 10 Concession 2, Woodhouse.

On February 24th 1923 Charles Gladstone Ivey and Imogen Elizabeth Henry were married in Toronto. He is listed as 38 years old and a miller, she is 23 years old and born in Pennsylvania U.S.A. and both are residing in Port Dover. Together they raised three children, a son and two daughters, in the big white house beside Ivey's Dam. Imogen would be the beautiful, elegantly dressed lady we all remember.
