"Matthias Steel came from the British Isles and was married at Niagara-on- the-Lake, Ontario in 1801. By 1806 he was in Norfolk county, Ontario and settled in Woodhouse Township in 1808. During the War of 1812 his store just over the Lynn was made the point of attack, plundered and burned by the American soldiers."

Some of the earliest documented settlers in Rainham Township were Frederick Onstine and Peter and Abraham Walker. Frederick Onstine's wife, Elizabeth Walker, is believed to have been a sister to the Walker brothers. The Walkers and Onstine are mentioned in William Chewett's Diary in July and August of 1793....

On 25 September 1795, Peter Walker was reported to the Lieutenant Governor as settled upon part of Lots 11 & 12 Front Woodhouse (Port Dover) containing 200 acres; allowed by confirmation of said report.....

After the War of 1812 the Onstines lost ten owned and three leased lots to the Forfeited Estates Commission.....

William Steel was adopted by Peter Walker a pioneer at Port Dover, Woodhou se Twp, Norfolk County, Ontario. Peter Walker and his wife, Ann Margaret Walker had no children of their own. In the will of Peter Walker dated 22 April 1818, it states "my adopted son William Steel eldest son of my aforesaid friend Matthias Steel". His brothers Joseph and Henry may have also been adopted by the Walkers

William Steele inherited half of what today would be Port Dover. For some reason he sold this and purchased land in Lots 23 and 24 Walpole Township, Haldimand County. He sold town lots here and named the new village Williamsville, today it is Selkirk.
Steele, Matthias (I13245)

"The Captain and His Crew" June 11, 2002
Port Dover Harbour Museum presents summer exhibit on legendary fishing families

Sunday, June 16 will mark the grand opening of "The Captain and His Crew," a special summer exhibit celebrating the legacy of William F. "Cap" Kolbe, who moved his fishing business from Erie to Port Dover in 1911 and whose family story parallels both the rise and decline of the Lake Erie fishing industry most of the twentieth century. Captain Kolbe and his sons Louis, Carl and Robert pioneered technologies and methods of operation that changed the way Ontarians caught, processed and sold fish from the Great Lakes.

The new exhibit will occupy the Harbour Museum's Dover gallery and features a large collection of photographs and other images from 1911 to the 1970s, as well as Kolbe artifacts, a Kolbe fish tub "family tree" and on video, a selection of remarkable vintage film footage. The historic films include colour 16mm home movies made by Louis Kolbe showing trap netting and gill netting in 1951. They also feature some nostalgic views of the beach and pier areas and of the old Kolbe plant and docks. Also to be shown in the exhibit is a recently unearthed television newsreel film showing the rescue of the crew of the grounded Kolbe fish tug Ciscoe at Clear Creek in March 1955. Opening ceremonies for the exhibit and a public reception will take place at the Port Dover Harbour Museum, 44 Harbour St. on Sunday, June 16 at 2 pm. The exhibit will remain on display at the museum until the end of 2002. For further information call the museum at 583 2660

From Kerry Wamsley, Harbour Museum - This whole area was swamp (between Harbour Street and the Lynn River). The Kolbe family came here in 1911 and fished out of Port Dover and owned the fish plant were Misner's is, later they built their new plant where Harry Gamble's shipyard is. Captain Kolbe used to stand on the dock and wait till all the boats were safely in to port. The story is that he was sitting at the Norfolk when someone told him that house was for sale and he went over and bought it just like that and moved his family here from Erie.

1945 - The Bride is Impressed With Many Things

A London girl whose home was so badly damaged in a German bombing raid that the family was forced to vacate, Mrs. Earl Stamp, a British war bride, has arrived at the home of her husband’s sister, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bridge, R. R. 7, Simcoe.

A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Porter of London, Mrs. Stamp was formerly Violet Porter, and she was married to Sgt. Earl Stamp on March 21, 1943. Making the long trip here with his mother was their baby son, Roy, who was just a year old on Friday. Mrs. Stamp and the baby had a good trip over and did not experience any sickness enroute.

"The Red Cross was just wonderful," declared Mrs. Stamp in paying tribute to the work done by representatives of that organization in providing comforts for these girls who have left the only homes they have ever known to take up residence in the country of their husbands.
"The food here reminds me of pre-war days in England," she said. "Over there we got enough to live on, but that was about all." Mrs. Stamp is much impressed with the great variety of food to be had here, but she told The Reformer that she was eagerly looking forward to sampling that delicacy, corn on the cob. She has heard so much about it that she can hardly wait to try it.

She has had a great time shopping in the stores here and can hardly believe that she can purchase almost anything without having to tender coupons for it as was the case in England where practically everything has been rationed. She was amazed in the manner in which clerks in stores here go to the trouble of wrapping up every purchase. In England, she said, you walked into a store and left with your purchase without any kind of a wrapper. The paper shortage accounted for that. While on the subject of paper, Mrs. Stamp expressed amazement at the size of Canadian newspapers. "Pages and pages" was the way she described them, and then proceeded to outline with her hands the size of wartime British papers, about as large as our tabloids, with only a few pages at that.

"It seems so airy over here," Mrs. Stamp stated when asked what impressed her most about this country. She said that she was simply amazed at the vast spaces of open land to be seen.

Preference for Canadian cigarettes to English smokes. Mentioning the fact that England had experienced a "heavy" snowfall last winter, Mrs. Stamp declared that she was looking forward to seeing an honest-to-goodness Canadian sample of the "beautiful" next winter. She was informed of the overabundant falls of last winter.

Mrs. Stamp did not say too much about the German blitzes, which her family experienced in 1939 and 1940. They spent every night in the shelter from six o’clock in the evening until six the next morning. She described the buzz-bombs as the most terrifying, particularly when the motor could be heard to stop, when it was known that they would land in the vicinity. The rocket bombs were not bad, she said, as their presence was not known until they had exploded.

Her husband enlisted on September 3, 1939, and after training at Petawawa, went overseas the next year. He went to France on D-Day and has since served in Belgium, Holland and Germany, being in the latter country at present. He is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Roy Stamp. Mrs. Stamp’s father served as C. P. O. with the Royal Navy in the First Great War aboard the battleship, "Royal Oak," and saw action in the Battle of Jutland. Her sister, Leading Wren Frances Porter, is a member of the Women’s Royal Naval Service

A REVERED LADY
(Simcoe Reformer)

Sarah Araminta, wife of the late Lieut.-Colonel the Hon. David Tisdale, P.C. K.C., passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. G. Boultbee, Wednesday afternoon, in her 88th year.

Mrs. Tisdale's original home was in the Township of Woodhouse, she being a daughter of the late James Walker, described in Owen's Pioneer Sketches as the first white child to be born in Norfolk County, and a granddaughter of Henry Walker, one of the very first pioneers to settle in Norfolk.

She married Hon. David Tisdale in the year 1853, and throughout his distinguished political and military career was his happy and honoured helpmate.

An accomplished lady, her quiet and unassuming manner, combined with a rare sweetness of disposition and tact, established a wide circle of warm friends and admiring acquaintances, by all of whom her death will be genuinely mourned.

For nearly 70 years she had been a highly respected citizen of the town of Simcoe. Until the death of her husband in April, 1911, the happy couple lived at
"Gore Lawn," the present home of H. P. Innes, K.C.,, which residence Lieut.-Colonel Tisdale built many years ago. To them were born four children:
Mrs. M. G. Boultbee of Simcoe,
Mrs. A. A. Canfield of New York City,
D. Robb Tisdale of Simcoe, and
the late W. E. Tisdale, K.C.

The funeral service will be held at the residence tomorrow (Friday) afternoon, at 2.30 o'clock, with interment at Oakwood Cemetery.

The bearers will be: Messrs. H. S. Falls, Frank Reid,
W. P. Price, R. G. Bowlby, A. W. Donly and Sheriff Tisdale.

About 1801 Daniel McQueen built a dam and a mill near a ford across the River Lynn, and the site became known as Dover Mills or Dover, after the English port of Dover.

Around 1808, Robert Nichol (1774-1824) moved to Port Dover from the Niagara area and bought a mill originally built about 1801 by Daniel McQueen. Within a short time, he had a sawmill, distillery, large barn, residence for workmen, coopery and storage building for flour, a huge stable and a large house. By 1812 he was probably the wealthiest man in Norfolk County. That spring he was elected MLA for the county. But 1812 was no ordinary year. The U.S. and Britain were at war and Upper Canada was in danger of invasion. At the personal request of Major-General Isaac Brock, Robert Nichol became Quartermaster-General of Militia. On May 14, 1814 the Americans burned Dover Mills, including the mill, brewery, distillery and buildings of Robert Nichol. Nichol suffered £6700 worth of damages in the process, which represented an enormous loss at the time and from which he never recovered. On the night of May 3, 1824, while returning to his home from Niagara he died during a late season snowstorm when his horse and wagon fell over a precipice in the village of Queenston.

Abraham Hoover, born December 15, 1771 and died August 31, 1831, was the fourth son and the ninth child, of Jacob and Barbara Hoover. He was likely born in Strasburg Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, before his parents moved to Manchester Township, York County. We believe he came to Rainham Townhip early but for some reason went back to Pennsylvania about 1800. By 1800 Abraham had purchased 500 acres of land in Lot 1, Concessions 1, 2 and 3, Rainham, and 600 acres of land more or less in Lots 7, 8 and 10, Concession 1, Rainham.

Abraham's father in law Christian Keller obtained Lot 24, Concession 3, Walpole at the same time Abraham Hoover acquired his land. This lot was sold in 1835 by Christian Keller's son John who had moved to Waterloo County in 1826.

Abraham Hoover gives Power of Attorney to his brother Daniel Hoover in 1802 and in 1804 Daniel sells Lots 7, 8 & 10 in Concession 1, Rainham to their brother Christian Hoover. Part of the north half of Lot 1, Concession 1, Rainham is left by Will by Christian Hoover to his son Jose in 1811, though by the abstracts this land still appears to be in Abraham's name. Jacob Hoover purchased the north half of Lot 1, Concession 3, Rainham in 1800 and in 1801 Jacob sells this to his son Abraham Hoover, thus giving Abraham all of Lot 1 in Concessions 2 & 3, Rainham. In 1817 Abraham sold 50 acres in the South part of Lot 1, Concession 2, this land containing a mill seat, to Veronica Vinecke and Veronica Miller, and the balance of the land in these two lots is left by will to his daughters Mary, Magdalene and Susannah who receive 120 acres, 120 acres and 90 acres respectively. Abraham eventually buys back Lot 8, Concession 1, Rainham which has been left by Christian's will to his son John. John moved to Markham and sold this lot to his father in law Jonas Byer in 1817. In 1818 Jonas Byer sells this lot back to Abraham Hoover. This lot would be where Abraham made his home, leaving the south part containing the residence and buildings to his son Abraham, and the north part to his son Jonas.

In 1809 David Hoover purchased 40 acres in the North West Corner of Lot 5, Concession 1, Walpole, part of present day Nanticoke, this land also containing a mill seat. In 1812 David sells this land to his brother Abraham. In Abraham's will he instructs his Executors to sell this land at such time as they think best. On September 1st, 1839, Daniel Hoover and Henry Miller, Executors for Abraham Hoover sell 39 acres of the Nanticoke land to Graeme Mercer for £1000. The remaining 1 acre is sold to John Hall for £125, March 25, 1856 by Daniel Hoover and Henry Miller, acting Executors for Abraham Hoover.

According to Borneman family records published by J. H. Borneman of Boyertown, Pennsylvania in 1881 and written in 1878, Hermannus (Harmonious) left his family and went to work as a blacksmith with his brother Henry in Huntington County, Pennsylvania, then left for Canada, British America, and "at that time his history ceases."

In 1796 Hermannus sold the farm in Rockland Township to his brother in law Adam Ruppert, giving a life tenancy to his father Hermannus Sr.

In 1797 Hermannus Zimmerman came from Western Pennsylvania and originally made the deal with Moses Nevill to purchase 200 acres of land, Lot 23, Concession II, in the Township of Humberstone, County of Welland, Ontario, Canada. The original deed lists purchaser as Harmonious Zimmerman, Blacksmith. He went back to Pennsylvania and came back to stay in 1798.

Next record of Hermannus Zimmerman is in 1808 when he sold Lot 15, Con 2, Humberstone Twp. to ? Augustine of Ridge Road. Now a stone quarry. Tradition tells us Hermannus Zimmerman left a living wife and four children in Pennsylvania when he came to Upper Canada. He had six more children here from a second relationship. Every year at Christmas time he would send money to the States.

From Robert Zimmerman, November 30, 2003, Message on Rootsweb:

If we are talking about the same person, Harmonius Zimmerman was born in Rockland twp. Berks County, Penna. His parents were Hermannus and Susanna (Borneman) Zimmerman. Harmonius left for Canada some time after 1797. His father landed at Philadelphia in 1753 aboard the ship Rowand and appears in the tax records for Berks County from the 1770s until 1797 when the property was sold by Harmonius to Adam Ruppert and his wife who was a sister to Harmonius.

At the time that Herman Sr. arrived in Philadelphia he was accompanied by a Mathias Zimmerman who was from Bolsberg, Germany; there is a possibility that they may have been brothers.
