Muskegon Co. Portrait and Biographical Record (date not known)

Through the good management of his farming affairs in general, the subject of this sketch has demonstrated the fact that skill and labor combined produce the best results. He and his brother are the most extensive and successful mint growers in Muskegon Co., and he has for ten years or more occupied a farm in Moorland Township, consisting of two hundred and forty acres, of which one hundred and forty are in a high state of cultivation. As a farmer and business man, he stands high in the confidence of the people, whose regard he has won by honorable dealings and genial courtesy.

Born in Haldimand Co., Canada, our subject is the son of James and Mary Ann (Yocum) Johnston. He is of Irish descent, his parental grandfather, John Johnston, having been born in the Emerald Isle, whence he emigrated to Canada at an early age, and engaged in farming there until his death in 1862, at the age of 81. His wife, whose maiden name was Susan Stewart, was a native of Canada, and died in 1865, at the age of 73. The maternal grandfather of our subject, Henry Yocum, was a native of PA, but passed the most of his life in Canada, near Niagara Falls. He died in 1869 at the age of nearly eighty. He was a wealthy and successful farmer, a prominent citizen and one of the first settlers along Lake Erie. The maternal grandmother, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Gould, was born in Canada, of German parentage, and died in 1855, at the age of fifty years. Longevity has been a prominent characteristic of this family through the generations. The great-great grandmother of our subject on the maternal side was Mary Stewart, who attained the ripe old age of 106, and a perfect image of her, as she appeared at this age has been preserved in wax.

The father of our subject, James Johnston, was born in the state of New Jersey in 1801. When a mere boy he acted in the capacity of teamster in the Government service during the war of 1812. At the age of 32 he moved to Canada, and after a residence there of nearly 24 years he removed to Berrian Co., MI, whence in 1865, he came to Muskegon Co. and settled in Eggleston Township, making his permanent home there. His death occurred October 28, 1871, when he was in his 70th year, and after he had suffered severely for a number of years. He was a member in good standing of the Old-School Baptist Church of Ashland, and was a man of good habits and lofty principles, whose entire life was devoted to the faith of which he was a follower.

The lady who in 1836 became the wife of James Johnston was Miss Mary Ann Yocum, a native of Rainham, Haldimand Co., Canada, born on August 2, 1816. She was a noble Christian wife and mother, beloved by all who knew her, and her life was a blessing to many. She passed from earth December 8, 1891, at the age of 75.

Our subject commenced in business for himself at the age of 22 years, and for sometime thereafter he engaged in lumbering, buying and selling lumber and shingles. In 1882 he settled upon the farm he now occupies in Moorland Township, Muskegon Co.. November 8, 1887, he and Miss Mary McVaugh were married. The bride was the daughter of Patrick and Katherine (Cull) McVaugh, natives of Emerald Isle who emigrated to America and settled in Chicago. In politics, Mr. Johnston is identified with the Prohibition Party, and takes a prominent part in municipal affairs, giving his influence and support to all enterprises calculated to promote the material welfare of the community. In his religious connections,he is a member of the Free Methodist Church, to the support of which he contributes with liberally.

He married Catherine Scovell and later married Catherine's sister Calista. His parents were Lewis Scofield and Eliza Hunter Bowen. PORT DOVER MAPLE LEAF, September 14, 2011

Old Maple Leaf files note the Scofield Block was erected in 1859 by Norman E. Scofield. According to writings by local historian, the late Dr. John Bannister, Mr. Scofield and a Mr. Scovil (who is believed to be a brother in law) established a general store in 1856 at an unknown location, moved their business into their newly built three-storey building that today is Schofields Bistro on the street level.

When store keepers Scovil and Scofield decided to build a new store they awarded the contract to Brian Varey of Port Dover ( a great-grandfather to Rob Varey of Port Dover). The brick structure was three storeys in height, having some ceilings as high as 15 feet. The partitioned walls of solid brick were 23 inches thick.

HIstorian John Bannister wrote, "little is known of the actual erection of the Scofield Block, but Customs records show that in July 1859 the schooner "Lerwick" brought iron columns for the front, which were cast by "Edyd & Byngham" of Buffalo, N. Y. whose name can still be seen at the foot of each column.

By 1865 the name Scovil disappeared from advertising in the Maple Leaf, the store name becoming Norman B. Scofield. In 1877 Scofield's advertised it was changing to a strictly cash business. (Hiram Scovell died February 28th 1866)

In 1912 the Scofield business was sold to Silas Butler. Seventeen years later the business was sold to Thomas G. Caley and the following year he purchased the building. At his death in 1955 his daughter Helen (Caley) Hamilton continued operating the store under the name of Thomas G. Caley Department Store. In the early 1970s the store closed and was rented to Al. Pattenick Dept. Store. There has been a number of owners of the building since and occupants located within the three store business block.

More About The Scofield Story

In last week's Maple Leaf story about the Scofield Block on Main Street it was noted that Thomas G. Caley purchased the building in 1913 and at his death his daughter Helen (Caley) Hamilton continued to operate the store until the early 1970s. The Maple Leaf was reminded that Helen married Gilman Scofield in 1942 and their only son is Ron Scofield who made a career as an RCMP officer based in Fort Francis. After Mr. Scofield's death in 1949 Helen married William M. Hamilton in 1953.

"The Scofield store in Port Dover dates back to 1859. It was first known under the name Scofield & Co. in 1893 while under the ownership of Norman Scofield's widow. In 1912 it was sold out of the family. The correct spelling of the name is Scofield. Tokens appear with both this spelling and Scoffield" (as is on this token). - From a guide to Ontario Tokens.

Nicholas and Elizabeth Outhouse's first daughter was Hannah, born in 1768 in Haverstraw, Orange County, New York and died in 1851 in
West Middlesex County, Ontario. She married John Caldwell Jr. in Tiverton, Nova Scotia in 1793. Their children were John, Elizabeth, Mary, Ezekial Robert, Hannah, Sarah Anne and Mathew.

In 1796, John and Hannah entered Upper Canada at Fort George. On March 31, 1797, they settled in Pelham Township, Lincoln County. John and Hannah had their first 3 children baptized December 24, 1799 at Niagara by Rev. Robert Addison. The 1805 census of Norfolk County shows John and Hannah living in Woodhouse Township. John was at the time of the census was aged 40, Hannah aged 37, John aged 13, Elizabeth aged 11, Mary aged 7 and Ezekiel Robert was aged 3.

The Caldwells moved to Charlotteville Township, Norfolk County before 1814 and then lived on north half of Lot 22 Concession 9 Westminster Township, Middlesex County on 100 acres. In 1818 they moved to Lot 30 Concession 2 of Westminster Township, and
John is said to be the lay minister at the Methodist Church.

John may have been married before in Nova Scotia and it is possible that the first two children belong to a first wife.
