World War II - Chief Engineer Officer Hugh Allan of Canadian Merchant Marine died on board S.S.George L. Torian when his ship was sunk by a German submarine on February 22, 1942. He was 53 years of age. The Port Dover Legion Branch 158 is named in his honour. He is remembered on a monument in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Son of Captain John S.Allan and Ann Jane Allan. Husband of Grace MacDonald. Hugh was lost at sea while in the service of his country, being torpedoed by a Nazi U-Boat 200 miles south of the Port of Spain. He was chief engineer on the George L. Torian. The Royal Canadian Legion Hall in Port Dover is named after Hugh - Port Dover Cemetery - Find a Grave
The house was owned by Hugh & Grace (MacDonald) Allan. Hugh's ship torpedoed - Hugh Allan Branch Legion - leaving Grace on her own turned the house into a boarding house - heard a lot of fun stories about the house while doing the research a few years ago when the MacDonald family was the family being honoured for Fishfest - Kerry Wamsley of Port Dover Harbour Museum
