In 1873, Louis (then 37) left Deep Creek, Iowa, on an eleven month exploratory trip by boat to the Pacific Coast. After exploring Northern California, and also making a water trip to Portland, Oregon, he returned home with reports of promising opportunities near Big Springs, not far from Yreka, California.
In 1874, at least 4 married couples (Nathaniel & Hannah, Louis & Caroline, Jim Lauderbaugh & Cindy (Dennis), and John Edmonds & Martha (Dennis)) and their children left for California, traveling in freight train box cars, along with camping gear, household goods, tools, food, etc. When the train stopped at sidings, at times up to four hours, they built open fires and baked bread in a dutch oven, and also washed clothes. Water was carried in a 50 gallon vinegar barrel.
