Jan Tjepkema was born in Leeuwarden, Friesland, Netherlands. On August 28, 1892 he moved to Amersfoort where he joined the cavalry. He also lived in Kampen, Lonneker, Velsen, Enschede and Amsterdam before coming to Canada about 1911.

To-day the 25th of January, 1911, appeared to me, Official of the Civilian Office in Amsterdam, in order to enter into marriage:
Jan Tjepkema born at Leeuwarden, living in this town, 37 years old, son of Klaas Tjepkema, deceased and Grietje Oddens living in Kampen and
Johanna Wennink, born at Enschede, living in London, England, 26 years old, daughter of Jan Wennink and Janneke Juijskes.

They planted a spruce tree on his gravesite in Hamilton Cemetery
One brother William (possibly another name, Pieter or Arend, as according to records he had no brother William or Willem. Arend was in Kenvil, Morris County, New Jersey working as a Carpenter for the Hercules Powder Company in 1918) came to Canada to get Jan's tools.
