DUNDEE AND BROUGHTY FERRY, SCOTLAND ON THE FIRTH OF TAY -

Four miles to the east of Dundee city centre lies the seaside suburb of Broughty Ferry. Known as "the jewel in Dundee's crown", its fine seafront esplanade and sweeping sands provide the perfect place for a relaxing stroll or a quiet picnic.

Once regarded as the "richest square mile in Europe" because it was home to the wealthy jute barons who built Dundee's textile fortunes- it can trace its origins back to the 15th century fisher folk who built their homes around the harbour close to Broughty Ferry Castle.

A small port and residential suburb to the East of Dundee, Broughty Ferry is situated on the north bank of the Firth of Tay opposite Tayport in Fife to which it was formerly linked by ferry. Once a fishing village and ferry port, Broughty Ferry developed as a residential and resort town during the 19th Century when many of its fine villas were erected by jute industrialists from Dundee. Incorporated with the City of Dundee in 1913, it has a fine seafront, harbour and esplanade. Guarding the mouth of the Tay estuary, the 15th century Broughty Castle overlooks the harbour. Built in 1498, the castle was restored during the 19th century and now houses a museum featuring displays on Dundee's maritime history.

Tircarra Gardens appears to be an area of Broughty Ferry.

      MONIFIETH -

The settlement of Monifieth dates back at least to the 9th century. The discovery of Pictish stones in the graveyard of St. Rule's Church suggests that Monifieth was a Pictish centre of some importance. (2 miles from Broughty Ferry) Tircarra Gardens appears to be an area of Broughty Ferry.
