  • Notes

    • On the 1828 Census of Humberstone Township, Welland County is:
      Josiah Dennis, 1 male over 16, 1 female over 16, 1 male under 16, 1 female under 16.
(Josiah Dennis, Elizabeth Zimmerman Weaver Dennis, Jacob Weaver, Margaret Dennis)

Jacob Weaver was born May 20, 1823 in the Township of Bertie, near Point Abino. His father was killed in the army before he was born and his mother was remarried to Nelson "Josiah" Dennis about 1825. Josiah Dennis' father Nathaniel Dennis and his brother Obadiah had inherited from their father Ezekiel Dennis, the western half of Point Abino. By 1829 Josiah had come to Walpole Township where he farmed land on Lot 17, Con 1, Walpole for Samuel Swarts who had a Saw Mill on the Sandusk Creek. Jacob grew up here and when he was 16 went to Simcoe to apprentice as a Tanner. About 1847 he married Hannah Dunmead and on the 1852 Census they are on the south east corner of Lot 18, Con 2, Walpole where Jacob operated a tannery on the east side of Long's Creek, which flows into the Sandusk Creek. He next moved to Lot 18, Con 4, Walpole, and in 1869 moved to Lot 2, Con 4, Rainham where he farmed and operated a tannery. He and Hannah lived there until her death in 1889 and his death in 1909. They are both buried in the Cheapside Baptist Cemetery.

Bertha, Ettie Phillips girl sent me them. Jake Weaver's mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Zimmerman. I was glad to know that..... his father got killed in the army before he was born & when he was two years old his mother married Josiah Dennis. He had no other brothers or sisters just half sisters and brothers. I used to go & see Grandpa often before he died & before I was married & he told me so, his mother just had him and no others.....If you haven't the list of the Dennis side that's Grandpa Weaver's half brothers & sisters I knew them all & their married names & where they lived & were buried & their families names. If you want them let me know & I'll send them or Susie & us may come up some time.
