LAWRENCE WEEKLY DEMOCRAT. 1901 Miller, Huntley, Harper, Woodley Family Trees and Connecting Families Andrew Backus born 1809 in York, England Died 6 JUL 1900 in Heuvelton, St. lawrence, New York Burial: Hillcrest Cemetery, Heuvelton, St. Lawrence, New York HEUVELTON, March 18. The Backus or English Settlement, west of this village in that section known as "The Horse Shoe," was settled as follows: In about 1818 one Joseph Backus came to this country from York, England. On reaching Ogdensburg the older Parish gave him a letter of Introduction to some man in Rossie, to whom he was recommended and with the view of having Backus settle there. Backus came to Heuvelton and stopped at a tavern then kept by "Mother Remington" on the lot opposite the present Grove Hotel. The main street at that time was York Street, the present State street had not been laid out. A bridge crossed the Oswcgatohie River at the terminus of York Street. Backus received refreshments for himself and his son William, a part of which was a glass of sling. He started for Rossie, crossing the bridge, by way of the Depeyster road, but on going down the river a short distance he stopped on the bank to rest. He looked across to the opposite shore and concluded the land must be good to raise such a beautiful forest. Contrary to his son's earnest wishes be returned to the tavern and made inquiry as to the land and the same was extolled so highly by "Mother Remington" that he concluded to-purchase, which be did, paying the cash therefor in gold to the surprise of all present, at the rate of eight dollars per acre, and was offered the land directly west of York street, where most of the village is located, at the same price. Two years later his brother Andrew came from England and purchased land adjoining his. This Andrew Backus was the father of George Backus, who was a successful merchant for years at Rossie, also uncle to Andrew Backus who died here last year at the age of 91. His great grandson married the great grand niece of the late Gen. Thomas- A. Davies, this marriage connecting English and New England blood. Other Englishmen soon followed the Backuses and also purchased land on the Horse Shoe, and in time all the land there was occupied by Englishmen except one farm which was owned by Nehemiah Jones, a Yankee, but in later years even this farm was purchased and is still owned by a Backus. The other Englishmen who came were named Smithers, also from York In England and one other named Raby whose wife was a Smithers. These Englishmen produced large families and at the time of our civil war no less than nine Backuses, five Smithers and a Raby enlisted in the 142nd Regiment besides those who went into other regiments. The Backus snd Smithers families have naturally intermarried. In one instance three brothers married three sisters, and a sister of the brothers married a brother of the sisters. In looking over some old account books of a merchant between 1865 and 1870 we find open accounts kept with eighteen by the name of Backus and twenty-five named Smithers, each account, no doubt, representing a family. They were inclined to perpetuate family christian names, and when there were many with common names it was not surprising that local nick names should be given to distinguish them, such as, Dandy Tom, Lame Tom, Depeyster Tom, Hinging Tom, Old Billie. Crying Bill, William T., Red Joe, Buffalo Joe, Shoemaker Joe, Ridge John, Deaf John, Anthony's John, Old Andrew, Young Andrew, Jerusalem Jack and Plain Jack, as well as many more. Strangers often get them mixed somewhat, but the apt nick names soon assist to distinguish them. These families are now very numerous In this county, and it is a pleasure to record that almost without exception they are prosperous people. | Backus, Andrew (I16135)

| 2855 | On the 1850 Census of Oswegatchie, Saint Lawrence, New York are: Andrew Backus, Aged 63, Male, Farmer, Born England Mary Backus, Aged 52, Female, Born England David Backus, Aged 13, Male, Born New York Jedediah Backus, Aged 11, Male, Born New York From "Howells - Young - Hubbard - Carpenter" Rootsweb file, owned by James W. Howells The English Forefathers of the Local Backus Descendants were the Brothers, Joseph, 1770-1834 and Andrew, 1786-1855. This record was compiled by Mrs. Grant Crysler. It appears she stopped updating the history approx mid 1950s. Additions have been included where known. (wb) Descendants of Andrew Backus and second wife, Mary Of the 5 children born to Andrew and his two wives, there are no records to prove which children were the result of his first marriage and which were of his second marriage except the case of David, the last child. There were 5 belonging to Andrew. THOMAS Backus, oldest son of Andrew, did not go to Rossie to live. He and his wife, Ann Barnard, a native of England, settled in Heuvelton. Their home was on Washington Street where Chester Backus now lives. He conducted a grocery store in the building where Oscar Martin has a barbershop. He was a regular attendant at the Methodist Church Services and it was noticed he always took a fresh chew of tobacco before entering the church. Friends often wondered what became of the surplus "juice" as he could not spit while in church. When asked, his reply was very simple. "I never put anything in my mouth that isn't good enough to swallow." Thomas was born in 1818 and died May 21, 1896. His wife, Ann, was born 1819 and died Nov. 18, 1901. They had five children, namely: Charles, Levi, Laura, Mary and Isaac. Charles, 1840-1913, never married. He was a Civil War veteran and is buried with his parents in Hillcrest Cemetery. Charles worked for his father in the grocery business. Levi married Aletha Elsie Barker of Rossie. He had a blacksmith shop in Rossie at one time but moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. Their 3 sons were: William (killed by a train), Henry, the victim of train robbers, and Fred. Laura, daughter of Thomas, married Dorr Stone, a farmer. They had 3 children; a son and twin girls. The son, Charles, married Minnie Thompson for his first wife. Belle Risley and Beatrice Childs are daughters. For the second wife he married Ina Gutterson. George Stone of Kendrew is their son. One of the twin daughters born to Laura and Dorr Stone died in infancy; the other, Gertrude Stone Puffer, passed away in 1951. Mary, 1849-1881, died at the age of 31 and is buried in the family lot in Hillcrest Cemetery. Isaac, 1852-1914, married Maria Rossand. They had 5 children, namely: Lena, Inez, Ceylon, Lula and Grace. Lena married Allen Spicer--there were children. Inez married George Cleland--there were 5 children. A son, Elmer and his wife, lived with Inez and one daughter, Leola. Her other daughters are Myrtle Bill, Hazel Hynes, and Mildred Pierce. RUTH, the only daughter of Andrew Backus, was born in England and married Samuel Miller, also born in England. They settled in Heuvelton, where a son, Frank, was born in 1860. On Nov.7, 1878, Frank Miller married Ann Smithers and in 1948 celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at the home of their daughter, Florence Hartman, Rochester, NY. Another daughter, Jessie Boice, lives in Rochester, too. Among their 23 descendants are 3 great, great, grandchildren. GEORGE, 3rd child of Andrew Backus, was born in England. Early in life he located in Rossie where he had a general store and served as postmaster. He was twice married. His first wife was Ann Raby. There were 5 children by this marriage and 5 by the second marriage to Margaret McCready. George died in 1889. The first wife died in 1863, aged 34 years. The 10 children were: Silas, Esther, Willet, David, Emma, James, Anne, Carrie, Norman, and Morgan. Silas, a carpenter, married Katherine Brown. Their 6 children were: George W., L. D. Backus, Raymond, Carrie, Alice and Margaret. George W. is a retired station agent at Canton, NY., L. D. lives in Chicago, Illinois; Raymond, 1890-1951, was the father of 5 children. One son, Raymond Jr. lives in Watertown, NY. Carrie married C. S. Felt of Hammond, NY. Alice married Roland Lunderman of Hammond and Margaret married Ralph Hazen of Watertown. Esther Backus Ormiston had a son, Charles (deceased) whose daughter, Mrs. Emerson Bothwell, lives in Ogdensburg, NY. Willet died in Park City, Utah, in 1886 when 23 years of age. Death caused by a snowslide. David (deceased) married Margaret Webster of Rossie. At this writing she resides at Gouverneur and is 82 years old. Emma, buried in Rossie Cemetery, died in infancy. James is living in Gouverneur at this writing. He was formerly employed by G.L.F. Store. Anne became the wife of Frank Gallagher. They had 4 children. She makes her home with her daughter, Mrs. Simonds at Auburn, NY. Her other children are deceased. Carrie died in 1887, aged 4 years. Norman and Morgan, the youngest sons, left no records and nothing is known of them or any descendants. JEDIAH, 4th child of Andrew Backus, was named in Andrew's will but little is known of him or his family. He lived in South Edwards and it is reported a William Backus from there was killed in the Civil War. It seems likely he was a son of Jediah Backus. (Also believed to be the cousin that Alta Ann married...(wb) (From the ages on the 1850 census, David was 2 years older than Jediah - hb) DAVID, 5th child of Andrew and Mary (Andrew's second wife), settled at Chippewa Bay, NY. David's first wife was Louisa Smithers of Heuvelton. She died Sept 25, 1872, age 33 years, leaving 2 small children, Wesley and Minnie. David's second wife, was Mary Perrin. They moved to North Dakota. Wesley, son of David and Louisa, married Hannah Smith. They had six children. The first two boys died young; the 3rd child, William, 1881-1951, married Lena Truber in 1904. They had a daughter Erdine who married Morris Felt. William had a grocery store in Hammond, NY. Iva, Wesley's 4th child, married Fred Bolte and lives in Sterling, Ont., Canada. 5th child, Ina is a widow (Mrs. Jeffers) lives in New Haven, Connecticut. She has a daughter, Eileen Durand. The 6th child, Frank, died in infancy. Wesley died in Lakeland, Florida, Jan. 12, 1926. He is buried in Hammond Cemetery. Minnie Backus Coons, second child of David and Louisa, died about 1917. She is buried beside her brother, Wesley, in Hammond Cemetery. It is known she was twice married but no records are available concerning her husbands or any children. These early settlers were pioneer people who with grit and determination made for themselves homes in a new land, and reared large families. Their log cabins soon gave way to substantial homes for they were skillful builders. Uneducated, perhaps by present standards. We find an occasional "X" among their signatures. Here and there an old grandmother, not to be outdone by the modern generation, enjoyed the proverbial clay pipe. They were honest, hardworking people and when their adopted country needed them, the sons unhesitatingly answered the call. Besides the ten Backus soldiers already mentioned, there were 4 others of that name from St. Lawrence County in the Civil War. These were Henry Backus, Company B, enlisted at Hammond and may have been the son of Levi. A second John Backus, of Company A, has a daughter, Effie Backus Davis, living on the Fullerville Road, near Gouverneur, who states that her grandfather was Peter Backus whose ancestors came from Holland. When arriving here the family lived near Black Lake. We find a Lucius Backus owned land there in 1826. We are not sure to which family he belonged. The other soldiers were Erastus Backus, Jr. who later became sheriff of St. Lawrence County, and Sylvannus Backus. These two were sons of Erastus Backus of Russell, NY., whose ancestors came to America in 1637. In this family we find such names as Eunice Backus Adrain; Foster Backus, lawyer and one time Dist. Attorney of Kings County, NY, and Jennie Backus, the first wife of Cyrus Clark. Among the present generation are Goldie Backus Forbes, the last of the Russell family; Roscoe Backus, St. Lawrence University graduate who began his teaching career in Rensselaer Falls, NY, in 1910. Fred Backus, veteran of World War II, who now lives in Denver, Colorado. It was at the time of the Civil War that the spelling of the name was changed from the old English name of Backhouse, which is found in all early records, to that of Backus. One wonders if John, son of Andrew and Mary, received his name from the grandfather in England. It was the custom of the John Backus families to give their children the names of kings, queens or Bible names. Thus we find Richard, a brother, and Anne (Mrs. John Rudock) and Ruth (Mrs. Christopher Bellaby) children of Joseph and Hannah who remained in England. The original John Backhouse, yeoman of Lancashire, was a Quaker. Besides local records, two of the references used in collecting the foregoing facts are "The New England Ancestors of Dana Converse Backus" by Mary Neilson in the Ogdensburg Library and "The Descendants of John Backhouse, Yeoman of MossSide, near Yealand, Redman, Lancashire" by Joseph Foster, in New York City Public Library. This history has been typed into a computer by Beverly Backus and would welcome any changes or additions to this copy.. 11104 Farmwood Drive Raleigh, North Carolina 27613 Alien Reports, Bk.1 Andrew Backhouse - no children listed, born England, age 44, farmer, place of intended residence - Oswegatchie, emigrated from England, arrived in US in 1822 | Backus, Andrew (I16162)

(Drowned off the ERIE WAVE as did Lewis Helka) The son Joseph, 16 years old on the 1881 Census, would survive the sinking of the "Erie Wave" in 1889. His brother Charles, 10 years old on the Census, would drown along with several others. One of three survivors, Joseph Crawford gave this interview: A NIGHT OF TERROR - Aylmer Sun Wreck of the "Erie Wave" as related to the "Aylmer Sun' by survivor Joe CRAWFORD Clear Creek October 12, 1889 I was on board the Erie Wave when she capsized. The night was intensely dark and chilly, a heavy gale had sprung up and the waves raged furiously, rocking the schooner to and fro so violently that all on board became terribly sea-sick. About midnight the storm grew worse and the captain said to Bell & Soper, "I will out the cable and let her go on shore." They answered, "No let her ride it out." Scarcely had the words left their lips when she capsized. Being pretty full of water, for the pump had refused to work all night, she failed to right herself and lay rocking on her side, the heavy billows rocking over her until her spar went out. I expected every minute to receive a death blow, as I struggled in the darkness and chilling waves to secure a clinging position. After I had succeeded I asked the captain if all were on board. He shouted back he was. I asked "Is Charlie there?" He replied that he was just ahead of him. Just then I heard a cry for help beneath. It came from Geo. BELL who was suffering from rheumetism and unable to help himself. I aided him to a secure position and was about to go to help my brother when a wave swept me off. Fearing being struck or rocked under if I returned to the schooner, I resolved to make to shore. Then came a struggle which no words can describe. Only those who have had a similar experience know how much the mind is capable of thinking, the heart feeling and the body of enduring in a watery combat. Nerved with energy that desperation gives and buoyed by the hope of saving my brother and comrades, struggled fiercely in the raging waves. My heavy overcoat and woolen clothing burdened me, but I dared not pause a moment to strip. Over and under the water swimming in every imaginable way to save strength I at last began to get near shore. Even then had mine been the only life at stake, I would have gone down. Every nerve and muscle was straining to the utmost to resist the angry waves thar receded from the clay cliffs. Several times I almost succumed, but a strong determination got me ashore. There a precipitous clay cliff met me which I began to climb by digging one hole after another with my feet. I had almost reached the top when exhaustion overcame me and I fell back some 15 feet and laid a moment stunned. A cry for help reached me from the perishing ones and seemed to give me supernatural strength for immediately I scaled the cliff that I could not have climbed in daylight. Then I climbed up another gentle slope and met another steep projection from which I again reeled and fell another few feet. Making a mighty effort I again gained the lane. In my eagerness to find a dwelling I took no precautions and in the darkness violently ran into a fence, knocking me almost senseless. Rallying, however, I followed the fence and soon reached Daniel MOORE's residence. No time was lost in spreading the news. Light soon came, the lifeboat was sent for, but all was in vain, for nothing dared face the turbulent seas. When morning dawned, it was plain to see that none were aboard. My brothers, brother-in-law and myself immediately began to search for the bodies. We searched the beach day and night until we recovered six; deep grief wringing our hearts, as one by one we lifted them from their watery grave. | Crawford, Joseph (I01077)

| Swarts, Lydia Margaret (I01076)

| 2873 | On the 1851 Census of Woodhouse, Norfolk, Canada West are: I. W. Powell, Merchant, Born Canada, Methodist, Married, Aged 51, Male Malinda Powell, Born Canada, Methodist, Married, Aged 42, Female Walker Powell, Merchant, Born Canada, Methodist, Single, Aged 24, Male Edwin Powell, Clerk, Born Canada, Methodist, Single, Aged 21, Male Berkeley Powell, Student, Born Canada, Methodist, Single, Aged 19, Male Israel Powell, Clerk, Born Canada, Methodist, Single, Aged 16, Male George Powell, Pupil, Born Canada, Methodist, Single, Aged 13, Male Cicero Powell, Pupil, Born Canada, Methodist, Single, Aged 11, Male Robt B. Powell, Pupil, Born Canada, Methodist, Single, Aged 8, Male Mary Powell, Born Canada, Methodist, Single, Aged 3, Female The Powell family came from Wales, one branch still occupying the ancestral estate at Nanteos, near Aberystwith. One of the forebearers in the long history of the family was Sir Thomas, who was one of the justices who defied the wrath of King James Il in 1688 and liberated the seven bishops who refused to obey the King’s dictates in spiritual affairs. It was one of Sir Thomas' sons who went with his Puritan tutor to America thereby establishing the American branch of the family. A descendant, Abraham Powell, became a United Empire Loyalist who, after the American Revolutionary War, settled first in New Brunswick and later moved to Upper Canada, establishing a home in the Township of Windham in Norfolk County a little north of the Town of Simcoe. This settlement soon took on the name of Powell’s Plain or Buckwheat Street. Besides farming, Abraham opened a small store. Israel Wood Powell, Sr., father of Dr. Powell, was born here in 1801, probably on the family farm. He became a clerk in the store of Job Loder in Waterford and later opened his own store in Colbourne, a community which grew up just north of Simcoe. He also became a land surveyor and in 1835 laid out the Town of Port Dover, a few miles south of Simcoe on Lake Erie, on land which he had recently purchased from his brother-in-law, Moses C. Nickerson. He built a large store on the corner of Main and Market Streets and also a splendid dwelling for his family on St. George Street, on the promontory formed by the Lynn River on the east and Lake Erie on the south. The home later became Orchard Beach Hotel and still later was known as Buck’s Hotel. The senior Powell was a public-spirited man and sat in the Provincial Legislature from 1841 to 1848. He was appointed the first Warden of Talbot District Council in 1842 and was a member of the first municipal council of the County of Norfolk in 1850. The central square of the town, which now bears the name, Powell’s Park, was presented to the village as a market square. He also presented sites for several churches. He died in 1852 at the age of 51. Israel Wood Powell Sr. married Melinda Boss and to them were born seven sons and a daughter. The eldest son, Walter, was born in 1828. He first took employment in his father’s store but became interested in military affairs, rising to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He, too, went into politics, representing Norfolk County in the Legislature from 1857 to 1861. He was appointed Adjutant General of Canada and was largely responsible for the establishment of the Royal Military College at Kingston. His death occurred in Ottawa in 1915 at the age of 87. There is some dispute as to the place of Israel Wood Powell Jr. in the family. Dr. J. A. Bannister, a historian of Norfolk County, claimed he was the second son of the family, born in Colboume, April 7, 1830. He determined this by a reference in the diary of Captain Alex McNeilege, a sea captain who settled in the vicinity of Port Dover and who kept a detailed account of events with a seaman’s accuracy. He tells of attending the funeral of Berkley Powell, supposedly the fourth son, in 1872 and gave his age as 38. This would establish the year of his birth as 1834. Another son, Edwin, was born in 1832. If Israel was the second son, he would have been born in 1830. But B. A. McKelvie, in a paper given before the Victoria section of the British Columbia Historical Association on October 21, 1946, claimed he had access to family records that stated Israel to be the fourth son, who was born on April 27, 1836. This latter record seems the more acceptable as it would make him age 20 when he entered McGill University as a student. If born in 1830, he would have been 26 which is an unlikely age for one to begin university studies. | Powell, Israel Wood (I14908)
