Wheelers hired a gang of men and shipped all their fish that way, They made their own fish boxes which were hammered together and the boxes stamped. The men dipped their nets in thin tar to strengthen and preserve them, The tar was heated by a wood fire and one time the fire department was called to Wheelers because the tar pit was on fire and almost burned the shanty.
