CHARLIE GAMBLE’S ESCAPE - Charlie Gamble, a deck hand on board the Wilma, was sitting near the wheelhouse picking fish out of the bull nets they had just retrieved from the lake that morning. The year was 1945 and as usual the catch had been good. Captain Duncan McLeod was busy setting his gang of nets in anticipation of another bountiful harvest. The captain was paying out the anchor line and he called Charlie from his job to take over the line. Charlie grabbed the rope and in the same motion stepped into the coil of expending anchor line. The line tightened around his leg and in an instant he was dragged over the stern 40 yards behind and down 15 feet under the water. The captain jumped to the controls and slammed the Wilma into full reverse, thus taking some of the strain off the line. Charlie Gamble, who was now strung upside down and taking on water, reached for his well honed pocket knife and slashed at the line, freeing himself from his entanglement. He bobbed to the surface and was hauled aboard wet and shaken but nevertheless thankful and ready to get back at picking fish. - from Lakelore

From a letter written in 1983 by Blake Weaver -

I had bought the Bees and supplies from Austin Pond after George died. Austin helped me a lot in moving my Bees to the North. Any time I needed a helper that wasn't afraid of Bees Austin was ready to help. He went up North with me after Berenice had gone for a couple of weeks to get the last of the Bees and supplies moved back home. Mr. Bowman up north was a cousin of Berenice's father and was so glad to have us to move Bees up there. He had a house partly furnished empty for us to live in about ¼ mile from his Residence and he helped me find 5 Bee Yards up there, we took about 200 hives up each year 1947 to 1950 and made 10 round trips each year between May 24 and October to get honey and Bees back home. White Clover was our main honey plant up there.

Mr. Bowman's mother was from Springvale and they went North in the early 1900s and hadn't had much contact with his folks in the South. He had us bring his sister up on one of our truck trips as she had never been there. The road was not all finished tarring in 1947. Mamie and I have been up to buy honey and also to the wedding of Joan Bowman and we visited one family of Mennonites who lived in the old school I had bought and rented to them for a couple years down here. Our stopping place was near Thornlo about 14 miles North of New Liskerd. I went to Kirkland Lake Market when I was up North over Market Day. I've had different friends visit us. Ken Wingers came up for a week end every year. Glen Lofthouse has been up quite often. He was up last summer and wants to take us up but we feel we can't stand the trip anymore...
